Hundreds protest storm sewer plan at city hall meeting

More than 500 residents gathered to oppose the Northwest storm sewer project. They shouted insults at the four Local Improvements Board members who voted to proceed. Police with seven officers kept order while Board Chairman Paul W. Friedrich explained the project delaying the session.

Parents to build school shelter for children

Honey Hills Parents Vote to Build Their Own School

About 40 residents of Honey Hills subdivision near Joliet gathered in a backyard meeting to demand a self built school after bond financing for a new Union district school was blocked. Fred Hahn led the effort with a proposal for a temporary one room structure at Cherry Hill and Spencer roads, backed by Union school board members and county officials.

Hearing on storm sewer plan draws 20 speakers and crowd opposition

Last night Friedrich outlined the purpose and details of a storm sewer project. About 20 speakers voiced support or opposition as roughly three to one opposed its financing method. The plan would levy a special assessment on affected property owners, though most favored city wide general obligation bonds. A pause followed when objectors were asked for further comment.
