The Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago released an extra 2 600 cubic feet per second to keep the Calumet Sag channel open for 31 days. Engineers estimate this will total 52 228 800 000 gallons, preventing plant shutdowns and easing coal and heavy oil transport. The district plans to reverse this next season to meet a 1 000 cfs average set by a 1930 court decree.
