Acting City Manager Jack Rohlf may be relieved and Comptroller George Comerford named acting city manager. The council plans a special meeting to confirm changes while Rohlf remains as public works chief and finance expertise shifts to Comerford.
Downtown post office and Westgate substation will extend hours to help residents mail for Christmas. Postmaster J Paul Schmucker said hours will be 12 noon to 5 p m Sunday and Sunday December 20. From Monday through Friday hours will be 8 a m to 8 p m. Also Monday and Tuesday December 21 and 22. Regular postal business will be conducted during the extended periods.
Acting city manager Jack Rohlf warned that the Jefferson St. bridge will be raised for about four hours Monday morning as the Corps of Engineers dredges the west side of the waterway to remove an obstruction. The span closes around 9 a.m. and traffic will reroute over other bridges.
Joliet officials discussed the city’s growth pains at a school board meeting. Realtor Ford C. June proposed lease changes to develop the Central school site with stores and parking, seeking to drop a Jan 1 1960 building deadline if financing and terms can be adjusted.
Joliet Board of Local Improvements rejected bids from D'Andrea Construction Co and Standard Paving Co for sewer and water mains in Forest Park. Bids surpassed Pfeiffer and Schultz estimates, with sewer and water costs exceeding the planned limits. One bidder warned future bids may be hard to obtain.
