Refinery Interested in Joliet Coke Plant Site

Iris Development Corp will acquire a 60 acre Joliet area site and dismantle the former No 2 and No 3 battery coke plant for sale to mills and machinery firms. Much scrap to U S Steel plants. some machinery sold to other firms. The plant once employed up to 700 men and ceased operations March 1 1958.

Fahey warns annexation tied to Raynor Hills Water Co

Joliet developer Fahey interrupted the city council with a three page statement asserting the Raynor Hills Water Co would be the linchpin of an annexation plan. He claimed control over the water franchise and accused Councilman Wilson of ties to U S Steel, linking this to a broader fight over sewage and a possible new trunk line between Jackson Street and the disposal plant.

Bertnik building fire causes heavy damage on Cass Street

Firemen from three stations under Assistant Chief James Breen doused an upstairs blaze at the Bertnik building at Cass and Herkimer, damaging a Howard apartment and causing smoke damage to two others. The Lighthouse restaurant on the first floor faces loss, with repairs needed. insurance covers the property. This is the second block fire in recent weeks after the Dimas block destruction in October.

Proposes Joliet Airport Authority to Boost Future Funding

Dr. Wylie H. Mullen urged Joliet to create an Airport Authority to access federal and state funds. He noted the Joliet Park District lacks funds to upgrade the airport west of the city and cited 19 Illinois airport authorities as precedent. A special election would form a six member panel, with three appointees from the county judge and three from the city council.
