Miss Emma Liles celebrated her sixteenth birthday with intimate friends at home Tuesday. Miss Beatrice Sleight plans a gathering with her mother on Park street. Ladies enjoy Kaffee Klatch at the McMillan residence on McCutchen avenue. Mr and Mrs Jaques host whist tonight on California street. Mrs Jas G Pitch entertains guests at tea on McCutchen avenue. A ladies reading circle organized at Mrs C F Blackingtons on McCutchen avenue with officers elected and next meeting set at Mrs McMillans.
Final examinations begin next week with a week reserved for prep. Professor Charles T. Lincoln departs for Boston for summer study and will return in autumn. Dan H. McMillan will deliver mining law lectures. The Magdalena camp hosts mine surveying and the Graphic mine survey, led by Professor Smith. Special lectures by C I Herrick cover Geological Philosophy with titles on geology and mining topics.
Professor Robert N. Hartman recently appointed chemistry professor at the New Mexico School of Mines was asphyxiated in Golden Colorado on May 1903 after resigning a prior post at the Colorado School. He had just begun his new duties when he was found in the chemical laboratory with students, amid a suspected pipe blockage in the hydrogen system.
A worker in a sulfuric gas generating room died after attempting to adjust a loosened plug when fumes filled the area. The incident happened as he entered the plant to increase efficiency and was overcome by the poisonous gas. The report notes the dangerous conditions and the immediate cause of death as inhalation of fumes. The text also provides a biographical sketch of Robert N. Hartman, born April 13, 1872 in Ghent New York, detailing his education at Chambersburg academy, Pennsylvania College, Johns Hopkins, and his academic career at Susquehanna College Tufts state School of Mines and the New Mexico School of Mines Socorro, including his leadership of the chemical department.
