Lodging by the day week or month at Mrs M Jose's hotel located just northwest of R N Hull Co's store Challis Idaho. Large rooms and good beds with reasonable rates.
The Custer county Idaho board met to fix a levy rate for 1906. A rate of 3.90 per hundred dollars was approved to fund state and county needs. Additional levies include 0.01 on horses and livestock and 0.003 on sheep, plus district school taxes as reported, with adjournment by Clerk Geo E. Keyes.
District Court convened in Challis from September 10 to 14 with Judge James M. Stevens presiding. Cases included settlements, divorces, and continuances. Geo E Keyes was approved for admission to the Bar after a committee investigation by M. A. Brown W. W. Adamson and Chase A. Clark.
The county’s persistently high tax levy, listed for twelve years from 1895 to 1908, is blamed for deterring capital investment and hindering development. Despite ample resources, rates remain high with no relief anticipated. Local officials warn the situation will continue to suppress improvement and investment.
Local residents arrive in Challis including Home Pick-Ups Mark Kuhn and family and new school teacher Prof Bowen. Primaries in Custer county are held. Dems to vote next Monday. Senator Macbeth reports freight rate cuts to Mackay and predicts a Democratic county win.
