Salmon River railroad boom fuels real estate surge

Boise area interview cites rapid railroad progress in the Salmon River country. Armstead to Junction track completed with 90 pound rails drafted by The Western Construction company. Vision of a through line to the Pacific coast, possibly Coos Bay or San Francisco, with hearings of surveys toward Salmon City Grangeville and Boise valley. About 30 workers, Italian laborers arrive, canal completion aimed by May 15 next year. Speedy feet and runaway race end in turkey bet

In Challis last Wednesday afternoon a 100 yard dash between Alex Burnett and Earl K Dodge ended with both running in opposite directions after the pistol. Alex claimed victory by “running away” from his opponent and received the turkeys. The article notes ongoing canal work in Round Valley and plans to avoid further foot races.

Death in School Drinking Cups pamphlet urged by board

The Massachusetts state board of health plans to send an illustrated pamphlet titled Death in School Drinking Cups to all school boards. Authored by Alvin Davison of Lafayette College, the essay explains how germs from grippe pneumonia diphtheria tonsillitis tuberculosis and other diseases can spread via shared cups and argues for individual cups or sanitary drinking fountains.

Lemhi County Goes Dry By Narrow Margin In Idaho

The Salmon Recorder reports Lemhi county tilting dry by over a hundred votes after precinct tallies show Patterson and May dry by small majorities in several areas while Iron Creek and Blackbird vote wet by small margins. Some see nearby Custer county as potential future dry territory with local option waves spreading across Idaho. Local option totals list 11 dry counties and 2 wet counties including Bannock Bear Lake and Kootenai.

Dramatic Musicale at Opera House Draws 250

A Dramatic Musicale by the C. E. Society in the city opera house last Wednesday drew a large audience despite rain, with about 250 attendees. Proceeds topped $40 as every number earned hearty applause and stage encores. The program featured Awakenings of Spring, Leila Buster, recitations, songs by Harry Nickjets, Boogie Boo by Rita Wilson, Advice to Girls by Mollie Drake and others, a select reading by Mrs Waters, and a pantomime Old Sweethearts of Mine.
