Suicide at the saloon on Main Street in Custer County
William Elder, 59, shot himself in the head with a 94 cal Colt at 9:30 pm Saturday in front of Emmett Hosford's saloon on Main Street. He died shortly before 11 pm after leaving letters. Elder, once Sheriff and Assessor, had recent gambling and drinking troubles and was reportedly under financial stress. His wife was away in Boise. He belonged to local Odd Fellows, Encampment, and Rebekah lodges. Funeral planned for today.

Death of Judge Jesse Finnell Ends Long Career in Custer County
Judge Jesse Green Finnell died at 2 a.m. Friday November 25 1910 at Challis Idaho aged about 69. He would have begun a sixth term as Probate Judge January 9 1911. Finnell had never married and had lived in Challis since 1850. An Odd Fellow and L C D F member, his funeral was held November 27 at 2 p.m. from the Hall conducted by Custer Lodge No 21. He endured a long, notable life as a pioneer, sheriff, treasurer and probate judge, with deep community respect. He came from Boone County Missouri and journeyed to Idaho with his family in 1852. His career included trading, freighting, mining, blacksmithing, and public office across Lemhi and Custer counties.
