Notice to the public announces Mrs. M. Jose's board and lodging northwest of R. N. Hull and Co's store in Challis Idaho. Meals and lodging are first class with fine rooms and good beds and a table supplied with the best. Rates available by day week or month.
Local chatter notes a proposed beet sugar factory at Lost River and outlines railroad ambitions. Mentions change to winter time, residents traveling to Houston and Mackay, mining news, a murder case hearing, Halloween mischief, and upcoming publication of The People's Advocate in Malad.
Railroad rumors surge as the Oregon Short Line terminus at Mackay is reported near completion. It is widely expected the line will extend 54 miles to Challis next summer with uncertainty about whether the route will run toward Salmon River up or down. The Salt Lake Tribune suggests Salmon City and Gibbonsville as likely objectives, noting the Idaho gold belt and limited rail access from Montana and Northern Pacific.
Fisher brothers, owners of the mine near Stanley Basin in Custer county, plan winter work sinking from 300 to 500 feet, running levels at 200 300 400 and 500 feet, and drifting the vein. Ore runs 316 to 370 per foot, the mill ran satisfactorily all summer with higher than expected capacity. The copper city nearby will see extensive development including a tunnel to tap the ore body at great depth.
In the Probate Court of Idaho the administrator R N Hull seeks settlement of the estate. The court sets November 18 at 10 AM for hearing the final account and petition for settlement. Publication notice to be run three weeks in The Alle Meese & Kreely Rewnomper.
Time card notices list trains for Oregon Short Line. Mall and Express, Salt Lake Express, Local Freight services, with schedule numbers and classifications. Contains routine service references and routing labels from the period.
The next regular examination for First through Primary Certificates will be held in Challis on November 21 to 23. Questions in State Construction will be drawn from Article 3, and in School Law from Chapter 33. Maxton Kennan, County Superintendent, Challis, Ida., November 2, 1901.
Mrs E J Dockery secretary of the Idaho Library Commission reports the Free Traveling Library case No 26 will be sent to Challis on November 1. Half rates on railroad and stage lines have been secured and a local librarian must be appointed. An exchange with Custer is planned and notices should be published in the Messenger announcing arrival and availability to all ages.
O. E. Penwell of Challis has been in Alaska for several weeks and registered at Seattle on the 29th.
