Pioneering Idahoan Sam Holman Recalls Mineral Era

A letter from Sam A. Holman of Clayton Idaho to Edward Brisbin recounts his role as a founder and first justice of the peace in Custer County. He describes the Silver Rule mine, an arastra, his quartz mill, and veins with 20 to 60 percent lead that may enlarge, plus a wagon road to his mine and plans for future visits to Saratoga. He also notes personal losses, including horses, and invites a visit with an offer to bring two packable horses.

Milton A Brown of Challis Idaho reports Custer county won the first premium of 150 dollars in the County Sweep Stakes at the State Fair. He requests notice to those who helped secure the exhibit and asks how the ore and prize money are to be handled. A diploma and ribbon accompany the award.

Dredge company at Canter advances drilling up Salmon toward Basin Creek to test dredging feasibility. River bed and flats suitable for placer gold mining extend as far as pioneer prospectors could reach. Gold values around 17 to 16 dollars per ounce with belief the river remains rich up to Stanley. many gulches and streams run gold-bearing. Idaho City backers include Bunch President. Esperanto movement noted with 5,000 Esperantists in the U S and Idaho Esperanto Association inviting interested residents to enroll via Stert P. Mill in Idaho Falls for mailing list.

Mid-Winter Course At Siste Normal School Al biom

The Siste Normal School at Al biom plans a Mid-Winter Course due to many new students. Regular first year work such as Algebra Ancient History English and Zoology will be taught. Enrolling in three or four subjects lets a student finish nearly all first year work. Classes start Monday November 13 1900. Board and room in dormitories cost 14.90 per month. Details available from the school president.
