Challis items report school closure, new arrivals from San Jose, Cal, and Challis events. Juniors, ministers, and local business people frequent gatherings, minstrel shows, dances, and social visits. Upcoming railroad and bridge work, hotel changes, and civic notices frame a busy local scene.
Challis residents attend the gold spike ceremony completing the Gilmore and Pittsburg railroad to Salmon City on May 14. The crowd includes railroad officials and locals who praise Salmon as a thriving, up to date town. President MoeCratch eon offered little about future plans, hinting only that Salmon river fish go upstream.
A Challis couple from two rival fathers plan to shoot each other but the youths propose a truce. Miss Eunice and Mr Grant, heirs to opposing sides, decide to retreat and discuss terms with their fathers, suggesting the dispute over a cherry tree is the real cause. The commodore and admiral’s son soften the standoff and consider a joint resolution.
Commencement last Thursday evening drew a large attentive audience in this city. The program featured Rev Barnett F A Reed Prof Miles Reed solo numbers Miss Kelleher Prof Reed State Academy at Pocatello speaker of nearly an hour on practical education. State Superintendent Miss Chamberlain was expected but did not attend. Graduates listed include Ruth Dorgan Mattie Boutroff Jona Kirk Arthur Baxter Philip Kirk Challis and Helen Ellis Ellis Idaho.
