Challis to Celebrate July 4th in 1903 Town Record

Challis plans a large Fourth of July celebration with an arrangements committee. The town quotes several notices of events including minstrel shows by the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Mackay on May 27 and a dance after the show. School Notes and Medal Contests at Local Academy

The school board awards a gold medal for the best speller in Seventh and Eighth Grades to Philip Kirk. A tie in the Fifth and Sixth Grade spelling contest awards a shared silver medal to Florence and Gertrude Nickerson. A silver medal for Seventh Grade top general scholar will be given next Friday. On Thursday evening May 19, Prof. Reed of the Academy of Idaho will speak on up to date education ideas.

Going Up Salmon River Rail Line Boosts Southeastern Idaho

Dr. Truitt of Challis, president of the Salmon River Land and Irrigation Co., says rail expansion up the Salmon river will unlock irrigation for 10 000 acres this year and next. The Gilmore and Pittsburg railroad obtained right of way within six miles of Challis, with property values rising sharply as industry activity accelerates.
