Electric Lights Compared With Oil Lamps

The Messenger details comparisons among lighting options. A 16 candela parallel lamp uses similar energy to an oil lamp. A 14 inch oil lamp consumes about a pint per hour, after trimming and heating it emits around 20 candles at a cost near 2 cents per hour using oil at 35 cents per gallon. A small domestic oil lamp yields 10 to 12 candles, costs about 1 cent per hour, with oil at 85 cents per gallon, provided the chimney is clear and the burner trimmed.

Electric light saves money and improves town lighting

The text contrasts oil lamps with electric lighting, noting higher brightness, lower ongoing costs, and safer operation. Oil lamps cost about tc. per hour to burn and require matches, produce glare and odor, darken chimneys, and pose fire risks. Electric lights offer bright white daylightlike illumination, instant reach, switch control, and potential municipal adoption with street lamps and waterworks.
