Challis and surrounding communities report a steady stream of visitors and locals, with routine travel from Mackay Lost River and Salt Lake. Notable notes include doctor visits, mining talks, a Saint Patrick’s ball in Challis, and updates on residents including graves, sickness, and property deals.
Emanuel Bell an old pioneer of Custer county died in Robinson on Tuesday morning March 14 1905 at 430 o clock. He had long prospected and mined with interests at Sheep Mountain and placer ground near Robinson Bar. A native of Portugal he was about 70 and known as a good honest man with many friends. Rest in peace.
District Court for Custer County met in Challis on March 16 1905 with Judge James M. Stevens presiding and county officials in attendance. The docket list includes seven civil cases, two divorces granted, and several continuances for term. parties and intervenors noted, with attorneys from Blackfoot Challis Mackay Boise expected.
The State Superintendent of Public Instruction will issue two sets of eighth grade examination questions. First set to be used the last week of March 27 28 29 30 31 and second set in the third week of May 15 16 17 18 19. Subjects ordered as arithmetic spelling history grammar reading geography physiology civil government. Minimum score 70 percent with average 85 percent. Report from the Lost Packer mine at Loon creek notes a winze development below the lower tunnel level with ores containing $50 to $130 in gold and high copper content. Management expects similar ore strength elsewhere on the property. A bid of $2 per share at Salt Lake was rejected.
Mrs J H Richards daughter of Aaron Conover died in Challis Friday evening March 1905 after a lingering cancer. She leaves three daughters and three sons, an aged father and two sisters in Challis. A lifelong Birch Creek Challis resident, she was born in Utah about 50 years ago. Her husband died years ago on Birch Creek. Funeral held Challis Sunday 2 p m largely attended. Relatives have community sympathy.
