Stage Line Conveys Passengers Between Challis and Mackay

Stage line operates four horse Concord coaches on the Thunder Mountain route linking Challis with Mackay and Three Forks, with daily service for passengers mail and express. School Day In Custer County Postponed By Storm

July 3 events in Challis were deferred due to stormy weather. On July 8 the high school graduation exercises were held at the Odd Fellows ball with Miss Permeal French delivering the address. Diplomas and a scholarship were awarded to Flora Hosford with several Challis and Clayton students earning diplomas. July Fourth under snow dressed city in festive gloom

July 4th opened with heavy clouds and distant sun, cool air after rain, hills clothed in snow recalling Christmas. The city wore abundant decorations as the grand National Holiday began with celebratory sounds from anvils and local pageantry.

A stormy day disrupted events but allowed horse racing to proceed. Carl Payette's Bill McKinley won the 600 yard dash, Buck ridden by John Gallagher took second, Lizzie owned by Gallagher won the saddle race, and George 8 owned by Payette won the 440 yard dash. Trotting race saw Gray Jack win with Bones second after VanCamp slowed near the finish. A three‑inning baseball game followed between Pabsamaroi and Challis, Challis 9, Pabsamaroi 4.

Firecracker Blinds Idaho Merchant in Challis Incident

Frank Nickerson, a Challis merchant, was struck in the left eye by a large 12 inch cannon firecracker thrown into his store by Thos Horton during a city event on July 8. Nickerson faces possible total blindness as doctors treat the injury, with Hor ton described as remorseful but potentially liable for criminal offense.
