The May 21 1881 issue of the Idaho Messenger from Challis Idaho is reproduced to show local business men of that era. Advertisers include L H Johnston Assayer R A Pierce Attorney W H Johnson Dentist and more. Also listed are Challis hotels restaurants livery stables drug stores and saloons plus a probate judge candidacy and a Republican meeting held April 4 1881 in Challis.
Johnston as secretary and a seven member committee was appointed to act for the party in various precincts. The group will select delegates for a county convention and decide its time and location. Names include Burns, Shoup, Marshall, Wesley Smith, Ring, White, Boorn, with others unnamed. Proceedings to be published in Yankee Folk Herald and SpaHo Messenger.
On Tuesday January 18 Hon W B Heyburn won the Idaho Senate seat with unanimous Republican support from both legislative branches. Democrats backed James H Hawley with a united vote. Heyburn, born May 23 1852 in Delaware County Pennsylvania, has long served as a lawyer and Republican loyalist. He moved to Wallace Idaho nineteen years ago and has lived in Spokane and Shoshone County since.

The county treasurer of Challis Idaho announces warrants across funds to be paid with interest if presented within ten days from the advertisement date. Warrants listed include July 1902 bounty and current expense funds, October 1902 issues, January 1897 redemption fund, with interest at seven tenths of one percent from registry date to ten days after the advertisement. January 20, 1908.
Newly elected Custer county officers were sworn in on the 12th. The Board of Commissioners elected Frank Achern as chairman and faces a session with work ahead, including handling warrants and a potential special levy next fall. A sled accident near Challis left several women bruised but uninjured overall.
