Peter Weiner, a German native and early Custer county pioneer, died in Challis on Wednesday February 19 1896 at 11 a m aged 76 after a throat illness. His death came quietly after a period of illness. The funeral was held the following Friday afternoon.
The Idaho Misting Exchange posts owners names and property details on a large blackboard for sixty days in its rooms and Idaho Mining News. Members pay 5 dollars and non members 25 dollars to cover clerical costs. Reports and maps sell at 2.50 and 0.50 respectively, with payment in advance. Deputy Sheriff Fenton, visiting from Hailey, seeks Paul P. Lawson who walked from Blaine County jail last summer. Lawson, once sentenced to hang for killing a man in Custer County, vanished after a moonlit escape and has been seen in six states. Fenton vows to bring him to Custer if confronted.
Custer Idaho February 16 1896 the Guster Stage Line struggles under deep soft snow with mail deliveries by snowshoe. Custer and Bonanza held a St Valentine ball but horses could not progress so attendees walked to the event and enjoyed the evening with Lee gained by Mr and Mrs McCarthy. William Bowen bought Geo Laundrys in Faulkner s saloon and New Years illuminations in Chinese quarters used lanterns and candles pleasing the Celestial mind.
An entertainment at the L O O F hall in Challis marked the closing of the school term. Miss R A Harnett and Miss Edna West led a program honoring Washingtons Birthday. The hall was crowded, the crowd gave hearty encores, and the four hour event praised Challis students and teachers. Citizens are urged to support better school facilities at future elections.
A brief notice notes a baseball club presence at the event. Miss Tna Smith represented Pocahontas and was praised as the best sustained character, earning the title of belle of the mask ball. The report omits details but confirms her prominent role and recognition.
Citizens gathered for Washington's Birthday exercises. The event featured a reading by Herndon and remarks by Bi were present. Mrs Mullaney assisted with the musical portion, and the crowd praised the orderly conduct and reflective tone of the day.
