Brutal assault shocks Ely as aging boarder is left dying
Boyd Lockhart, a 78 year old Idaho resident lodging at Ruth boarding house, is reported dying after a brutal beating by Chris Johnson. Sheriff Butler captured Johnson near Robinson Canyon while locals rallied to protect the victim and medical aid was summoned. Johnson allegedly struck Boyd from behind with a heavy club as he stood warming himself by a stove. Boyd, a respected traveler and member of the Masons and Odd Fellows, was staying in Ely since last summer and had visited the Ely hotel with friends, where he discussed the attack with proprietor Mr Murphy before his condition worsened. The case hinges on witness availability and the motive remains disputed as authorities investigate at the mines.
