The Western Publisher August issue reproduces a photo of the Challis Idaho Messenger office interior. It notes the Messenger shop is well equipped and the paper strong despite being 60 miles from the railroad, with M M Sweet as editor and publisher.
Challis community updates include teachers starting next Monday with Miss Weaver and Miss Butts, arrivals from Mackay and Blackfoot, a new Prospector and Thunder Mountain News plant, and mining reports from Loon Creek and Mackay. Challis schedules two days of horse racing on September 15 and 16, 1904, offering purses for various events including One-Fourth Mile Dash and 600 Yard Dash. Entries close at noon with fees paid to J. P. Spalding, races under American Trotting Association rules, and music nights plus a village welcome for Rev. McDougall, pastor and speaker, who arrived after academic study and marriage in 1895.
A clipped notice reports Rev George L McDougall A B newly called as pastor of Challis Congregational Church in Idaho. Born on a Wisconsin farm, he worked summers on farms in Iowa, attended normal school by self effort, and began preaching at 23 as a supply man in central Iowa. He is described as a pleasant gentleman and capable pulpit orator.
A 50 ton water jacket smelter will be installed on Greyhound Mountain this fall and expected to operate within two months. Announced by C M Hays and G F Graves of Greyhound Mining, the plant was bought from Colorado Ironworks and arrives in Ketchum in three carloads. It cost about 25000 dollars and should run steadily with nearby valuable properties on Greyhound and Bernard mountains.
Articles of incorporation were filed to form Cash Box Gold Mining company with offices in Salt Lake City and Boise. Officers include Peter Albert as president and director in Custer Idaho Geo Bowden as vice president general manager and director C E Eddy as secretary and director and W F Adams as treasurer all based in Salt Lake City Utah The capital stock is $500 000 with shares at $1 each The company owns mining claims in the Loon Creek district Custer County
