Placer Mining at Stanley Basin Sees Dredge and New Mills

The Stanley Basin mining district near Stanley and Kelley Gulch shows plans for a large scale operation. A dredge boat, Stanley Dredging Company, is under Wm. Burroughs and Chicago capital, with work planned this Spring after overhaul. The Valley Creek gold quartz group, owned by Judge Price, Darlington, and Hastings, will start the 20 stamp mill when weather permits. Challis and Sturkey’s five to eight claim hydraulic ground yields about 3 weeks work with bedrock at 9 feet and average daily returns of $20 per man, plus rifle-powder sized gold and occasional nuggets. Basin supports cattle and sheep as well as mining, with several other mines including Lucky Strike, Murphy, Bowen, Rapp, Mountain Girl, and Boise City syndicate claims.
