London Times reports from Cavite dated Aug 3 describing a night assault by about 2600 enemy forces under cover of rain and swamp. The 10th Pennsylvania led by Col Hawkins held trenches while two companies of the Third Artillery under Major O Hara reinforced. First California and First Colorado provided support. two hours of heavy shelling yielded only ten killed and forty wounded for American forces.

Deaths include Private Frank Fuller, Sergeant Arthur H Henri, Private Richard W Johnson, and Private Herman W Goetz, all of Illinois or Michigan units, and typhoid or yellow fever. George Telling of First Wisconsin dies of typhoid at division hospital in Jacksonville and will be buried locally.
New York reports Yale carrying the Eighth Illinois colored regiment toward Santiago. Six sick and wounded left behind include George Walls of Chicago with a thigh contusion and Charles Ambrose with a broken kneecap. Also listed are Samuel Rudd of Saginaw Michigan, Lawson Baker of Chicago with malaria, James S Walter of Newburg Indiana with rheumatism, and James Baker of Chicago with gastritis. A Wisconsin dispatch notes three deaths among volunteers near Ponce Porto Rico: Private Van Breda Marshfield died of fever, Private Allen Wausau died, and Private Schuh Appleton died in successive days.
President appoints Judge J N Hobson father of Lt Hobson Merrimac fame as Greensboro Alabama postmaster. nomination urged by Republican townsmen as symbol of goodwill. Also notes Wisconsin soldiers march from Camp Douglas under Lt Col Caldwell covering fifty five miles and a general order granting one month furlough and transport home for sick and wounded soldiers.
Bank of Waverly in Waverly Illinois closed its doors with Albert Roehrer as president. A placard claimed directors can meet all obligations and urged creditors not to sue while pledging no asset diversion until debts are paid. Bank arranged to issue assets and liabilities shortly. owners valued around $500,000. liabilities range from $100,000 to $200,000.
Mobsters in Corinth Mississippi seized Mullock Walker from jail and hanged him from a telegraph pole after dark, then released the body to the crowd. Walker confessed to crimes and named two other Black suspects as citywide fear erupts in multiple retaliatory incidents.
Confession by Mrs. Orr reveals she attempted to poison her husband on July 4 with a coffee decoction laced with snake heads procured by the negro Harris. Record, Castle, and Sanders allegedly planned the shooting, but the gun malfunctioned. Orr reportedly kissed his wife goodbye before leaving for choir practice, and the Household awaited his return for the fatal shot. Mayor Archer comments on Lorilla Weaver correspondence and letters from a Cincinnati bureau.
In New York, August 12, police officer Henry C. Hawley of the Tenderloin station killed his wife, his mother Mary Hawley, and his children a four year old son and a six year old daughter before taking his own life in a drunken rage. The tragedy is reported from the city’s police precinct.
At Dug Hil Missouri two miles north of St. Joseph five or six armed men halted an Omaha Burlington line express train at 9 pm. They seized the Adams Express safe, rolled it into a wagon, then dumped it on the highway. The safe was found two hours later unopened. Passengers were not harmed. A red lantern signal preceded the fusillade as the engine was detached and run 200 yards. Express messenger Frank Hogue offered no resistance. Reported booty valued at 8280 checks out with claims of loot.
A fatal central city affray leaves three men dead and a woman dying. Shannon and Giddings die after a street fight with Wear attempting to intervene. Shannon shoots Giddings then wounds his wife who survives but is not expected to recover. All involved are local pioneers. Giddings held political posts.
London reports the foreign office announced George N. Curzon as viceroy of India succeeding the Earl of Elgin. Curzon had been parliamentary secretary for the foreign office. The appointment makes Mary Leiter, daughter of merchant prince TZ Leiter of Chicago, mistress of a grand court and near a queen.
Washington reports the manufacture and distribution of aluminium and brass Trade Checks violate the statute of February 10, 1891 prohibiting metal or its compound designed to resemble government coins. The checks spread through extensive business houses and reach small towns and logging camps in Wisconsin Minnesota and Michigan, making real money difficult to secure.
Emperor William invites representatives of all evangelical churches abroad including those in the United States to attend the ceremony dedicating the Church of the Redeemer in Jerusalem on October.
