Bullets of spicy town life spill into a chaotic page with a melee between youths and Grange members during a village meeting. Citizens boast about a planned slogan and a rain soaked football game as crowds endure wet conditions and a long Saturday.
The Rittman Indians travel to Dalton for their first County League football game. Injuries leave three linemen out. Yochheim and McGee listed as hurt and Boyce out, with coach Tibby Young slotting experienced substitutes. Game starts at 3 30 p m.
This week the Indians focus on defense after a battered Coventry encounter. Boyce suffers a cracked rib, while Miller Wertz and Boling join to boost the line by about 100 pounds. Dalton leads the league race with two wins and a tie, and two new Rittman players plan to appear in the Dalton game.
Rittman High School music instructor Frederick Ebbs conducted a musical examination of about 500 students. He expects to select nearly 150 for the new high school band and will hold a meeting at 7:30 p m Monday in the Right school auditorium to explain the process. The test covers rhythm notes melody and chords to identify each pupil’s best instrument.

Rittman real estate owners will pay 15.1 mills for local taxation in 1938 after a Tuesday night conference of the Board of Education and Village Council with County Auditor Dan Snodert at Wooster. The levy allocates 4.2 mills to village operating expenses, 1.4 for village debt, 5.6 for school operating expenses, 2.0 for school debt, 2.0 for county use, and 0.7 for township and other uses. total 15.1 mills, down from 15.4 this year.
Seven scouts of Troop 405 will leave Friday for Camp Manatec to enroll in the junior leaders training course held over the weekend. Scoutmaster Charles Bradshaw Jr. stated last night that Kenneth Hilty Harvey Hockersmith Wade Milford, patrol leaders, Robert Weng er and Robert Oebler, junior patrol leaders, Frank Hitchin, junior assistant scoutmaster, and Harold Snyder, troop scribe, will attend.
Clarence Baker of Barberton will address the Sterling United Brethren Sunday School rally at 9 30 Sunday morning. The First Brethren congregation stages an all day event with a picnic dinner at noon. Reverend Albert Flory is expected back from Whittler Callt for the day and will resume seminary studies in Akron.
Russell Dull of Rittman Ohio and Nell By Ball of Rittman Ohio obtained a marriage license. Rev Hendrickson officiated.
Vallandingham recounts a chaotic American Legion national convention in New York City. He describes door banging at 3:30 am, a wedding party panic, a lost 40 and 8 pin, a hotel craps game halted by police, and a live duck aboard a train. He and Akron Post 19 toured Coney Island and major city sights.
Dr. John Sutter Wayne County health commissioner told the Rotary Club that people contract most diseases from one another and that public health officers must eliminate unhealthy conditions. He said pure water and milk are basic essentials and that Wayne County ranks high on the state public health calendar. Introduced by W. W. Bodager, club and county board member.
The Rittman Civic Association reports achievements for the year including a uniform lighting and decoration plan for merchants during Christmas, a home building and rental campaign in Rittman, and a motion to keep peddling out-of-town handbills free. It also helped establish Merchants Bonus Night, secured a lower electric rate, and will elect three officers at its second annual meeting at 6 pm Tuesday in the United Brethren church parlor. Franklin McNutt of Columbus will speak.
The Rittman band directed by Byron McMillen performed its last concerts of the season on Sept. 15. The 22 musicians rehearsed Thursdays and played at parks since June. The group includes six cornets, four clarinets, alto horn, two alto saxophones, three trombones, bass horn, bass drum, cymbals, and baritone. McMillen, active with Otfo Box Board, has led bands in Kittanning and Blairsville and has 24 years of musical teaching and directing experience.
About 60 awards will be distributed in Rittman on Saturday October 9 as the Merchants Bonus Night Plan reaches its climax. Tickets are handed out by participating merchants until 6 p m that day and remain eligible for the final drawing. Winning numbers will be posted for a limited time and details will appear in next week’s issue of The Rittman News.
Russell Caldwell urged the Democratic Club to mobilize voters for Roosevelt and the New Deal, citing past showings in 1932 1934 1936 and promising continued strong turnout. The meeting at City Hall launched the local campaign with candidates present and membership drives under way.
Rittman gas consumers face a 33 percent increase on 1006 cubic feet, with new monthly minimum and tiered rates. The village council approved the 1935 ordinance, effective August 1997 for two years, detailing charges by consumption tiers including 20 cents per 100 cubic feet for the first 500 feet and escalating steps thereafter.
A new proposal from the Ohio Fuel Gas Company, discussed in private at council committee, asks for lower initial rates and a two year extension at 136 per 1000 cubic feet. The plan outlines three year and two year rate structures with step increases and an overall rate cut after a prior 36 percent rise, seeking council approval to extend the contract five more years.
An automobile driven by Mr and Mrs Herbert Brodbeck of California received minor injuries when their car struck a culvert five miles southeast of Rittman on Monday. The couple, identified as Sterling residents, were treated and released at the scene. Authorities cited uncertain lane conditions and possible weather factors in the crash.
