Wittman Day Picnic Brings Town Alive
A town wide celebration marked Wittman Day with a morning start and a packed park. Tragic Plane Crash Kills John Rik and Hurts Brother near Rittman
A plane operating as the Eagle made a forced landing near the Iutman orchards due to motor trouble, instantly killing 23 year old John E H Rik and injuring his brother Paul LeRoy 16. Both sons of Mr and Mrs O W Rik of Georgetown. John’s body was viewed by about 800 people at the Buchwalter funeral home while 850 attended his funeral at East Gilppewa Brethren church. Paul was hospitalized at Wadsworth hospital for treatment with a full recovery expected. The plane, owned by Ohio Box Hoard and piloted by Rik for four years, supposedly nose-dived shortly after a smooth landing attempt. The craft was a new ship acquired by Akron partners in fall of 192?. Continuous tributes followed from family and community.
