A memorial tone frames a family loss and the joy of two local winners, Donald Glessner of Star lit and Bob Wallace, who top Ward's Men's Wear suit club. The piece mixes personal grief with light sports notes and brief quotes on national issues and Winnipeg TV plans.
Dr. W. B. Melenbacker died Wednesday evening at Des Moines General Hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services are set for Saturday in Atlantic Iowa. He is survived by his wife Ida two sons Karl of Rittman and Lloyd of Clinton Iowa two daughters Mrs Paul Caster Des Moines and Mrs Harold Miller Casper Wyoming and 66 grandchildren. The trial will be at Atlantic.
Final plans for the Rittman Community Daily Vacation Bible School run from 9 to 11 30 a m June 4 to 15 with Mrs A O Hall named preschool superintendent and Mrs D B Davidson supervising the primary department Rev Virgil Snyder to lead the intermediate division and Mrs William Davis directing music The meeting at EUB Church included teachers assistants and staff with parental pickup for three year olds at 11 a m daily offered.
About 235 boys aged nine to 15 will join the Rittman Little League this year. The schedule runs June 4 through August 20 with two games weekly. Most games are at Strickland’s Garage field, others near the Ohio Boxboard. Weekday games at 6 pm. weekend games at 2 pm. Admission is free. American League managers include Larry Wertz, Marvin Adams, Frank Moore, John Simonton. National League lists Jay Rohrer, John Butcher, Jerry Lambert, Dr. Smoot, Wayne Ferrer among others.
Rittman Fire Chief Everett Winkler released the Ohio law on petroleum labeling. The statute prohibits selling any petroleum liquid in glass containers except factory sealed one quart or smaller. Gasoline alcohol antifreeze and kerosene must be in clearly labeled containers per NFPA standards.
Pvt. Donald P. Kallenborn of Doylestown Ohio serves with the 8th Infantry Division at Fort Carson Colorado. The unit gears to move to Europe in the fall as part of Operation Gyroscope. A 1953 Doylestown High School graduate, he worked for Babcox and Wilson of Barberton before enlisting last February.
The 1956 Rittman High School class will graduate Tuesday evening at 8 pm. Dr J B Rosemurgy pastor of Newark First Methodist Church will deliver the commencement address. James W Frye Jr will give the class address Irma Maine class president will present the class memorial and William Maus of the Rittman Rotary Club will present the Rotary Club award.
Jane Emeh Joann oParo and Virginia Trogden selected as 1956 cheerleaders after May 24 tryouts. Five girls auditioned. selections made by student and teacher vote.
Rittman residents will honor war dead with a parade and ceremony on May 30. The route is altered with a 10 30 a m start at West Sunset and a southward move to the cemetery. Local Legion leaders urge attendance at services and provide parking directions and speaker line up. Gold Star parents urged to contact A M Wenger and flag kits sold at Wald's Market for memory day observances.
Real estate listing by Russell W. Frey of First Rittman Company opens 26 lots west of Fairlawn Ave and south of Home St in Willow Brook Housing Project. Platted with underground utilities and curved streets approved by City Planning and Council for single residences with financing available through Realtors or owner.
Head-RHS seniors Mary Lou Urmos and Robert Carey Jr top the Honor Roll with straight A’s for nine months. Mary Lou, daughter of Lazar Renuk, active in National Honor Society and multiple clubs, plans modeling. Robert, son of Robert Carey Sr., earned a $200 Kalamazoo scholarship and a $100 Junior Achievement award, aiming for Paper Technology at Western Michigan. Mrs. Herald Mougey underwent gallstone surgery and is recovering well in Wadsworth Municipal Hospital.
Americans wear the poppy on Memorial Day as a pledge to cherish veteran ideals. The American Legion and Auxiliary fund and craft poppies with disabled veterans, selling on Poppy Days to support widows and families. Ohio’s shop is at Sandusky's Soldier's and Sailor's Home.
Mayor John Baldwin proclaims May 25 and 26 as Poppy Days in Rittman to support American Legion and Auxiliary efforts. The event raises funds through coin boxes for disabled veterans and their families, with no fixed price for the poppies.
Rittman Junior High plans commencement exercises Friday May 25 at 7 30 pm in the high school auditorium. Miss Marilyn Landis will play March Rom aine and Rev Wheeling will give the benediction. A wide program features solos recitations and essays by students and a Boys Ensemble and Brass Ensemble.
