Susan Jane-Davis aged eight months from 427 W Sunset Dr Rittman is judged Wayne County winner in KYW-TV Kitest Kiddie Kontest. Her photo was selected from over 6400 entries and she will receive a top prize stereophotos set.
Tent space and tickets are main business as the Rittman Carni-Fair nears. The event runs July 7 to 11 beside Diversion Hall with rides booths and tent displays. Tickets for nightly prizes include a clock radio a movie camera outfit an automatic washer a clothes dryer and a stereophonic set. Sponsored by the Lions American Legion and volunteer firemen, with Gooding Amusement of Columbus last year.
Russell W. Frey attended the National Chamber annual meeting in Washington D C where President Eisenhower delivered an unscheduled speech urging sustained foreign aid. Delegates from all 50 states discussed taxation balanced budgets foreign aid and business stability. Erwin D Canham was installed as national chamber president and Frey noted broad bipartisan dialogue on complex issues.
The Ohio Retail Annalist reports March 1959 sales rose 10 percent from March 1958 and 16 percent over February, with a 1 percent drop after seasonal adjustment. First quarter 1959 sales were up 8 percent year over year, florists up 56 percent and motor vehicle dealers up 41 percent from March 1958. Dayton led gains, and declines occurred in four sectors.
Tuesday night showdown looms as Frank Watson and Leslie Bowers lead Sunset Drive residents opposing street paving assessments. They cite a $1489 per front foot estimate and existing sewer and water charges, while council considers two hour parking limits and tree preservation on N Second and N Fourth streets.
Ohio Boxboard Company employees received two safety awards from the National Safety Council for outstanding safety performance in 1958 and for a four month no accident period. Ed Stentz accepted on behalf of staff. Thomas J Cain presented the honors. Nick George noted factory improvements in safety. Glen Butler highlighted 1957 award context.
Mayor Houglan warns residents about a canvassing group posing as furnace inspectors. The men enter homes, claim faults, require repairs, and recommend a specific firm. Citizens advised to contact police if suspicious contractors or inspectors are encountered.
Robert Perrin takes over as Scoutmaster of Troop 405 in Rittman with assistants Thomas A. Schaad John L Haley Les Bowers and Delone Bowman. The committee includes Emil Firis Cy Jones Kenneth Hilty Ralph Armstrong George Sandrock Billy Holt Willard Hilty and Vernon Phillips as retiring Scoutmaster. Four patrols Flaming Arrow Flying Eagle Rattle Snake and Hawk currently meet. Registration stands at 52 boys with two new patrols planned from 14 Webelos advanced. The troop recently camped at Mohican State Park and Isaac Walton Park and prepares for Camporal at Camp Manit ek May 22 through 24 with about 5000 boys expected.
Funeral services were held Thursday for Clyde Armstrong of Cana an who died Monday in a tractor accident on his dairy farm. Armstrong, a breeder of registered Brown Swiss cattle, lived his entire life on the farm. He was a son of Thomas and Sarah Kinney Armstrong and a member of Cana an Lutheran Church. Surviving are his wife Mae Haegner who operates a music studio on the farm, a sister Mrs Emmet Carmony of Wooster, and a brother Frank who died earlier.
Not all reports are in but this year’s March of Dimes campaign in Rittman was a success with $972.37 collected. Chairmen for the drive were Miss Betty Klotzle and Miss Jeanette Winkler. Mrs. Dale Widmer chaired the Mothers’ March.
Jack Rice of Rittman faced grand larceny charges after allegedly taking farm equipment from Miss Margaret Gettings on a January agreement. He claimed to borrow tools to farm his father's land, then used them on his property. The owner, Russell Wulf, reported the loss. dragging marks led to Rice’s arrest. Rice settled by paying $13.50 for damages, and charges were dropped.
The Inside section highlights the greatest number of pictures in years and includes features on the Little League preparation and the Doylestown Fire Department. An editorial page is emphasized for readers.
Annual mail box improvement program runs May 18 to 2% with emphasis on rural and mounted routes. Post Office urges owners to install and maintain boxes that are neat, accessible, and weather protected to avoid delivery delays, with names and addresses clearly marked on fronts or lids.
Milton Presbyterian Fr Unites Brethren and Wesleyan Methodist era sponsor the annual Community Duty Vacation Bible School at North Street School from June 8 to 19. Sessions run 9 to 11 30 each morning with programs for ages three through junior high, including Bible study crafts recreation and a closing picnic. Rev. Dwight B Davidson invites children to “Adventure with Christ.”
First week of a two week community Birthday Calendar sale has begun. Band members and parents seek birthdays anniversaries and other occasions for publication. A $5,000 goal funds new band uniforms with $1,500 still needed. Calendars will print a Band photo in uniforms and include clubs activities and general community notices. Call Mrs William Maus or Gene Sharick to arrange listings for dates times and places. Calendars available after August 15 covering September 1959 to September 1960.
