A son to Mr and Mrs Kenneth Kurtz of Second Street on Friday May 5 at Wadsworth hospital. A daughter to Mr and Mrs Kenneth Ulm of Grandview on Wednesday morning May 10 at Wadsworth hospital. A daughter to Mr and Mrs Ernest Solsberger of Easton on May 11 at Wadsworth hospital. A son to Mr and Mrs Arthur Dan of Sterling on Sunday after May 7 at Wadsworth hospital.
A Schermerhorn of Baldwin Wallace College Department of Sociology will speak at the seniors' commencement on May 25 at 8 pm. The school office announced the plan, with the rest of the program to be arranged by the graduating class. Commencement activities begin with a Baccalaureate service for about 30 seniors at the high school auditorium at 8 pm on Sunday, May 21.
Mayor John W Baldwin proclaims Saturday May 27 Poppy Day in Rittman. Legion Auxiliary and Girl Scouts will distribute the poppies and citizens urged to wear one to honor the dead and aid living World War I and World War II victims.
A special Howard A Barr Post No 423 meeting authorized a committee led by Warren W Bodager to locate and purchase a suitable house in Rittman for a Legion Home. The facility will provide daily recreation for World War I and II veterans, host social events, and serve as a community center with athletic activities for all residents. Further site details and updates are promised.
Norris Keating of Rittman Road was chosen to lead Wadsworth Eagles Aerie 2117 for the year from June 1 to June 1, 1945. He has served as Steering Committee chairman for the Wadsworth FOE and lives in the Rittman community for 19 years.
The Red Cross Blood Bank comes back to Wooster on May 15 and 16 from 12 45 to 4 pm at the Lutheran Church. Call Mrs J H Fisher or Mrs W W Bodager to offer assistance. E D Steiner & Sons of Rittman RD win exclusive use of the Pine Tree herd name for Holstein Friesian cattle.
Unofficial tabulation shows Milton Township committeeman results. Pct 1 lists Steiner and Goffinet with one and one percent. Pct 2 lists Maine with five percent. Pct 3 shows Sigler with seventeen percent. Pct 4 lists Wald with seventeen percent. Pct 5 shows Rhonemus with twenty two percent.
The bulletin lists personnel from Rittman and surrounding areas on leave or assigned locations including Great Lakes for naval indoctrination, WAVE recruiting in Cleveland, and various APOs in New York and Camp Breckenridge. It notes broader Navy Department shifts with women now making up nearly half of on duty personnel, plus updates on transfers, hospitalizations, and family visits involving multiple service members and their families.
Selective Service Board No 2 reports 18 men ordered to join the Navy on May 25 and nine to join the Army on May 26. The small call allows the board to meet with ease from its pool of men under 26 who have passed pre induction tests.
President-elect F C Kanehl reported at today’s noon Rotary gathering on his attendance at the district convention in Cleveland. A J Tuccinardi stressed the urgency of the Ohio Boxboard Co employment shortage and urged members and friends to consider part time work during the critical period.
The Rittman Presbyterians bowling team captured the church league championship at Wadsworth Recreation Alleys for the season just ended. Members listed include FC Kanehl Verne Gebhart James Gibson Harry Bedford Fred Waugh and Leonard Over.
A committee appointed by the Rittman post of the American Legion organizes the May 30 Memorial Day events. R. D Wenger will be officer of the day and parade planner. Boyd Miller coordinates church involvement. Commander Eaton of the Ohio Legion’s 8th district will speak at the cemetery amphitheatre.
Funeral services for Hayes McElroy age 37 were held at Ebert Funeral Home in Rittman and later the body sent to Portsmouth for additional services at Mrs Clara Crawford’s home. Burial took place at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Manchester. McElroy had come from Portsmouth to work at the Ohio Boxboard plant and his sister accompanied the body.
Mrs Sadie Jane Baker 72 widow of Samuel Baker died Saturday morning at 2 oclock in the home of Mrs Kate Kraut 8 Main Street after a heart attack. She is survived by two daughters Mildred Rohn of Wadsworth Nora DeFoe of Midland Michigan, a son Foster L in the Navy on New Guinea, three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 pm at Ebert Funeral Home with Rev W E Price officiating. Burial was in Rittman Cemetery.
Wayne County Treasurer Ben McIlvaine says the June real estate tax payment period opens May 15 and runs through July 20. Local collectors will assist at West Salem Paul Mattesons store Creston Canaan Sterling Smithville and Doylestown. Tax amounts are listed on the December statement or receipt and were mailed earlier this year.
Mrs Ida Ebersole, 55, died Friday night at the family home four miles southwest of Rittman. Survived by husband Harry and three children Alice Homer and Paul, all at home. Lived in Smithville area. Services conducted Monday at 2 p m at the Brethren Church in Smithville with Rev G W Dodds officiating. Burial in Smithville cemetery.
John J Wein of Rittman serves as acting United States Marshal in Cleveland following the death of Marshal G J Kennath last Thursday. Wein, deputy in the Cleveland office for eight years, resides at the Hotel Sigler.
Wayne County voters chose write in winners in Republican contests for treasurer and commissioner and placed a light vote on write ins for November. Dan W Buchwalter led incumbents with 1629, Frank Taggart won against rivals, and Harry Hartzseler was eliminated with 87 votes. John Ho Ferguson matched opponent totals for GOP treasurer while Florence Patterson led write ins with 37. Horace M Doyle trailed with 5. In Democratic races, John Wilson of Orrville drew 668 votes for sheriff nomination, Paul Riffe received 12 votes, and Ed Mills faced Wilson in November. The Democrat governor race favored Frank Lausche with 929 votes, Herbert 539, and Stewart 410. Dan Snoder led Republicans with 1918 in the state, while Mellvaine led Democrats with 1343. Total votes 2176 Republican, 1588 Democratic, with several minor tie write ins noted.
An inch of rain halted a busy week in Wayne County fields. Frost appeared in low spots after the rain and temperatures cooled but not enough to cause major damage. Bees resumed pollination as warm sun revived early plantings of lettuce peas and radishes and onions show green in many gardens.
