The Rittman Mothers club meets Tuesday night May 15 at Mrs Herbert Willems home W First St with a White Elephant exchange. The W BA meets with Mrs C L Gordon State St Tuesday May 15 at 2 00 pm. The Neighbors Club gathers Wednesday May 16 with Mrs C J Steiner. Girl Scouts Troop I hold a regular meeting Monday evening at City Hall with patrols and material distribution for posters.
Mrs A Chenal and Mrs E J Woyat hosted a bridal shower for Evelyn Haller at a home gathering Sunday evening. The event honored her upcoming marriage to Samuel W von Gunten of Owings Mills Maryland on May 15. Attendees played cards and were treated to lunch, with many gifts presented to the bride elect.
The Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No 2117 of Wadsworth will hold a Mother's Day memorial service at Wadsworth High School Auditorium on May 13 at 2 pm. Jimmie Walker of Akron delivers the address. Carnations will be given to attendees and a mother with the most armed forces children will receive flowers. Two Rittman men were elected to office within the Eagles for the coming year: Noras Keating as president and Ernest O'Brien as conductor.
The D of A held its May 8 meeting with 16 members. Donna Fixler and Iris Gift were elected bowling captains. First officer nominations were made. Birthday anniversaries for Q1 will be honored with a June 12 dinner. Presenters were given to Donna Fixler, Billa Cauffman and Gertrude Helms. Members may dine at Smithville Inn on May 21 at 6 p.m. The Lodge covers dinners for honor roll members. Meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. at Rohrer's Hall. Orrville Council grants a 30 day extension in the membership contest.
Mr and Mrs Earl Killough and son Jackie were Sunday dinner guests in the Sam Welch home. Mrs Charles Trent and granddaughter Janice Bowman visited. Mrs Ernest Howell returns from South Carolina. Mrs Wm Swartz and Margaret Swartz visited in Pittsburgh. Mrs Norbert Reffert and Mr and Mrs Ed Peete attended the May 5 wedding of Cyril Reffert in Versiand.
The Miller meeting of the Freee Nous Couch was held at Mrs Harold Simpson's home on a Tuesday evening in May. Norma Rasch served as co host. Mrs Leonard Oversong sang Indian numbers with Mrs C L Norton. Poetry readings followed by Mrs U M Wenger and Mrs Co L Norton. Mrs Norton read an Indian version of the 23rd Psalm and played a piano solo. The program closed with the national anthem and refreshments for 10 members and three guests. The next meeting is planned for a park location.
The eighteenth annual Sterling Alumni Banquet will be held in the high school building on Saturday May 19 at 6 30 pm. Lloyd Adams is president and Anna Mae Wirth is secretary treasurer.
A long column of change of address notices lists service members and civilians with new addresses or postings. Entries include Pfe Robert E Orr in New York, Sgt John Zivkovich in New York, Pvt Jack Bruce at Keesler Field, and Sgt Roy Trent among others, plus family updates and local notices from Rittman, Ohio and surrounding areas.
The Rittman Girl Scout Troop T hosted a Rainbow Tea at City Hall on Wednesday from 7 to 9 pm. Girls wore rainbow crepe paper outfits, decorations matched, and the program included readings, solos, dances, and a chorus of songs before presenting corsages to the mothers.
Miss Lillian M Ball daughter of Mr and Mrs Kelly Ball and Hershel W Mellott son of Frank Mellott were married May 1 at the home of Rev William Echols. The bride wore navy blue with pink accessories. The groom recently received an honorable discharge after two years in the South Pacific. They will reside in Rittman.
The DDD Sub Debs met May 5 at Pauline Lakemire’s home. Pauline received a charm bracelet for her birthday as the group enjoyed refreshments and games. Club pins are expected soon and a note about the Junior High Basketball team appeared in the National Sub-deb paper. Carol Kennedy to host June meeting.
Mr and Mrs Ed Reffert attended a wedding reception in Cleveland on Saturday for Cyril Reffert. Mrs C Habegger and Mr and Mrs Crist Habegger of Youngstown visited the W W Badager home on Sunday. Mrs Curtis Shields of London arrived Tuesday for a visit with Ernest Harrison. Mr and Mrs Joe Wrigley and daughter Carol Irene of Glendora California spent the weekend with I W Baysinger. They were en route to Clinton New Jersey. Mrs Joe McClellan and son Gail were Sunday guests at I W Baysinger. Mr and Mrs Tom Young moved their household goods Tuesday from St Marys to Meadowvale Ave Grandview into the former home of Mr and Mrs
May 14 Cub Scout meeting at City Hall 730 pm with parents and den chiefs. Memorial Day observance planned by Legion with Rotarians and Lions at Snyder's Restaurant 8 pm. John Vial returns as City Hall custodian and deputy. Dorothy Lach named Federal Housing Authority manager at Willow Brook and Wadsworth trailer camp. Hits and Bits notes Cinderella show with 44 children, and May programs at the Kindergarten.
Rittman will add a fifth grade teacher next year to handle overflow enrollment. A vacant second floor room at the First building will be remodeled and a fire escape installed. The district also seeks a high school chemistry teacher amid rising demand.
Health conferences for children entering school this fall will continue in May and June at Creston, Sterling, Smithville, and Rittman. Each child will receive a physical exam and recommendations to improve health, aiding school progress. Parents may bring their child to the most convenient location.
In services on May 13 the Church of Christ conducts special recognition for mothers of honor roll boys and girls. Awards will go to the oldest mother present the mother with the youngest baby and the mother with the most in attendance with her.
Mayor John Baldwin announces the recreation field will open soon for softball and tennis after school. Four senior league teams and two junior league teams will participate. volunteers are urged to help with field repairs and court fencing while workers finish ongoing improvements.
The Rittman High senior class held their final assembly with a candlelit procession and a large central 45 floor design. A saxophone solo by Teresa Zvada and a cornet piece honored members serving in the armed forces, while a class history and prophecy were presented and a hymn sung by 15 girls.
The 7th War Loan Bond Campaign starts May 14 with April factory activity and June 18 to 30 as follow-up for industrial utilities and financial institutions. Rittman Doylestown district set a $174 150 individual quota to buy bonds from May 14 to June 30, the largest local target yet. Schools surveyed potential buyers as canvassing begins urging households to sign for bonds when canvassers visit.
The European war ends as President Truman and Prime Minister Churchill declare victory at 9 am May 8. In Rittman the mood shifts from relief to reflection with prayers for the fallen and those in danger. Local factories and shops close early and churches hold simultaneous services amid a quiet town and brownout conditions.

Staff sergeant Harry Ditch, star athlete of Ritman High and the College of Wooster, is wounded in action on Luzon as of April 16. He was promoted recently, served with the 33rd Division across the Pacific, and is awaiting mail at Co 1, 130th Inf APO 33 Postmaster San Francisco. His wife Esther Robinson waits in Beverly Hills.
The Sterling graduation events set for May 13 and May 18 feature a Baccalaureate at the high school with decorations by juniors. Principal speakers include Professor William C. Albert Schaad remains governor Harvey Hockensmith prelate and Ralph Krabill past governor serve as officers. other roles filled by C L Sayre Alan Schumacher Howard Schwartz Fred McAnallen Donald Brodbeck.
A son was born to Mr and Mrs De Schaub on Monday October 7 at Wadsworth Municipal Hospital.
