Birds and births fill days in Rittman area

A feature of local life recounts Emil and Ida Finns attracting bluebirds with a rotted log nesting box, plus numerous hospital admissions births and community events. It notes return of nesting birds, newborns in April and June, and local residents’ hospital stays, concerts, and a garden club dinner.

Rittman Voters OK City Income Tax

A community open house at Milton United Presbyterian Church will feature former Rittman resident Rev. Richard Milford speaking at 4 p.m. on Sunday May 23. Milford, son of Carl and Mrs. Milford, is pastor at Gross Ile Presbyterian Church Michigan and a 1951 Ohio University graduate. Kenneth Osborne and Rev. James Watt organize the event.

Rittman approves half percent income tax in vote

Official tally 716 for 337 against confirms passage of a half percent income tax in Rittman. The tax takes effect July 1 and is projected to raise about $70,000 for the city treasury with half earmarked for capital improvements. Laughlin will administer the measure. precinct results shown across all nine precincts.

Rittman High School Vocal Concert Set for May 14

The second annual Rittman High School vocal concert will be held in the school auditorium Friday May 14 at 8 p.m. with the theme Say it With Music. More than 100 students from Prep Chorus Choralettes and concert choir perform with an instrumental ensemble joining to sing O Come Let Us Sing. Mrs Carolyn Warren directs. Admission 75 cents for adults 35 cents for students. Tickets at door or from choir students. Proceeds fund choir awards contest fees and a choral acoustical shell fund.

RHS Honor Roll List Reflects Fifth Six Weeks At Rittman

Rittman High School reports 53 students named to the honor roll for the fifth six week period under Principal John Heter. Seniors Margaret Goodhart and Rita Hessidence lead with all A grades. many others earned at least two A’s while some maintained B averages.

Rittman Jaycees Named Most Outstanding in District

The Rittman Jaycees were named the most outstanding in the district at a North Canton meeting attended by over 300 members. Past President Jerry Lambert and President Warren Hardgrove accepted the honor as the group eyes a national award at the Buffalo convention.

Father Of Ronald Goodhart Dies

Services for Earl J. Goodhart, 68, of Kent-Mogadore Road, Kent, father of Ronald E. Goodhart of Rittman, were held Tuesday. He died of a heart attack Saturday morning. A Portage County resident all his life, he was a retired firebuilder. He leaves his wife Gertrude and three other sons Louis Raymond von are Norman of Kent and 12 grandchildren. Burial was in Kent.

PCA Dividend Packaging reports Ameri ca has declared a quarterly dividend of 22 1/2 cents per common share payable June 10, 1965 to stockholders of record May 14, 1965. The firm also announced nine month gains with sales up nearly 6 million and earnings at 618,920.

Nice Operation at Rittman Beverage Store

W S S MacKenzie deputy director of the Ohio Liquor Control Commission called the Rittman Beverage Store a very nice operation after inspecting the state licensed outlet. The store, run by Mr and Mrs Don Glassner, received its license last year and this was the commission’s first visit.

Fires Strike Rittman Area With Four Blazes Over Weekend

Firefighters battled four incidents in Rittman over the weekend. A 11 a.m. Friday alarm at Packaging Corporation of America cafeteria was contained quickly. A Sunday blaze at Vimeo Macaroni Products drew a crowd, and a trailer fire on the W Goodman property east of the Erie Railroad underpass followed. A final fire Monday near the city dump was extinguished. No insurance was carried on the incidents.

City Sprays Ponds to Tackle Mosquito Problem

City crews began spraying ponds and creeks this week as part of a crackdown on mosquitoes. City Manager Will Laughlin notes new swings in parks and maintenance work on park equipment. Nearly 50 youths use the city hall community room during school breaks as Williams Restaurant provides meals.

Miss Rittman seeks entrants for queen contest

Entries are being accepted for the Miss Rittman beauty contest to crown a queen for the upcoming four day Homecoming July 28 to 31. Past winners include Joanne Milford and Sue Wilson. New Sunset Lanes Bowling Center Under Construction in Rittman

Construction of a new Sunset Lanes bowling center begins at the Rittman Shopping Center site at Sunset Drive and Seneca Street. The 1350 by 100 foot steel structure will host 12 lanes initially, with plans for up to 16 lanes later, and parking plus walkways to connect to adjacent stores.

Services Thursday For John Luikart

Funeral services for John Luikart, 84, will be held Thursday at Gillman Funeral Home with Rev James Watt officiating. Burial follows at Ritt mvian Cemetery. Calling hours Wednesday 7 to 9 p.m. He died Monday after a brief illness. Born September 14, 1880 in Moore County, he lived near Bittman since 1922. He was a respected farmer, predeceased by wife Ida in 1956. Surviving are a son Irvin Lutkart, a daughter Miss Josephine Lutkart, a brother Julius of Hannibal Ohio, and a sister Mrs Kitty Black of Pennsylvania.
