Legion to Promote Home Flag Displays in Rittman

The American Legion plans a door to door visit Tuesday evening April 3 to persuade residents to display an American Flag at home on national holidays. They will offer a 3 by 5 flag set with pole and brackets for 3.00, as part of a national drive to encourage flag display. The campaign notes May Day as a counter to international communist celebrations.

Rotarians to Hear New Yorker Speak at Luncheon

Robert Rau of New York City will address Rittman Rotary Club at the Ev United Brethren Church luncheon Thursday. Rau, vice president and director at Stein Hall and Co. and Stein Davies Co., will discuss vocational service and Buyer and Seller Relations. He graduated Princeton 1928 and earned a Columbia masters in 1941. He has extensive Far East buying experience and represents a large corn starch company. Invitations were sent to Rotary Clubs in Wooster Dalton Orrville and Wadsworth.

Local businessmen to tour steel plant in Massillon

Rittman businessmen will tour the Republic Steel Plant at Massillon on Wednesday night, April 27. To attend, register with Ralph Krabill of the Rittman Savings Bank, Ralph Overholt of B. and W. Oil Co., or Russell W. Frey of the Rittman Press. Prior trips visited Seiberling Tire and Rubber Co., Babcock and Wilcox, Columbia Southern Chemical Co., Ohio Match Co.

Rittman Recreation Council Elects Officers

Mrs. Ralph Gwaltney was reappointed chairman as 11 members met Tuesday in Recreation Hall for organization and officer election. Mrs. Warren Keister was named secretary treasurer and the group kept the monthly meeting date of the fourth Tuesday at 8 pm in the hall.

To Be Observed Youth Week in Rittman May Week

Rittman will observe To Be Observed Youth Week from May 9 to 15. Plans were announced at a Citizens Youth Committee meeting at City Hall. Herald Mougey is the committee chair. a first meeting is set for Monday at 7 30 p m at City Hall. The roster includes W H Hauenstein C E Rhonemus Russell Frey Homer Moore Ray Rogers Mrs Thelma Gwaltney Roger Hessidence and Rev Plummer. Representatives from student groups and committee members are expected to attend. The committee urged local groups churches clubs and individuals to assist. Reports on youth activities were given including the Junior Teen Club for 7th and 8th graders and the RGTC club at Rittman High School with 90 percent participation and a conduct code. An adult education program and spring sports were discussed.

Two Weeks Left to Enter Rittman Easter Coloring Contest

The Rittman Press invites area children under 14 to enter its Easter Coloring Contest. The three week event runs through April 9 with winners announced April 13. Entrants must color at least three of the sketches and may mail or deliver entries to the Press office by noon April 9.

Drunk Drivers Fined in Rittman Court

Three area residents learned the hard way that driving while intoxicated brings fines and jail time. Clarence Wilson Harold Neuffer and For Preattle were fined $100 plus costs and three days in jail before Mayor John Baldwin. Joe Ayers fined $10 and costs for reckless driving. Dixon Hammer fined $10 and costs for assault and battery.

Arrest of Substitutes Mail Carrier for Theft in Ohio

Thomas F Freed 23 of Rt 4 Rittman in Cuyahoga County jail on 2000 bond charged with theft from the U S mails. A substitute mail carrier since December he was arrested after his daily route. He appeared before U S Commissioner W G Doran Youngstown and bound over to federal court after complaints by Rittman patrons of missing money mailed to them. Officials say losses exceed a hundred dollars.

Doylestown Steeple To Be Torn Down After Storm

The 77 year old steeple of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Doylestown will be torn down after last Tuesday’s wind damaged it beyond repair. Only the Methodist Church steeple will remain, as Zion Lutheran’s tower was removed earlier. Debris and a decorative cross were blown off in the storm.

Twenty three Music Students In State Meet

Miss Virginia Wenger leads a group of twenty three music students bound for Kent on Saturday April 2 to enter the Ohio Music Educators state competition. Phone Service Woes After Snow Storm Hit Rittman Area

After a weekend snow storm and midweek windstorm, the Rittman area faced widespread outages. Up to 1,500 families lost electric service briefly, about 300 phone subscribers were off line for six hours to six days, with many customers unable to reach others due to disconnected lines. Local officials and company managers described heavy repair work, with 60 phone lines restored by two crews by Saturday and more by Tuesday, while electric crews fought damaged poles and a major 24,000 volt line to restore service.

Easter Sunrise Service in Rittman at Milton Presbyterian Church

The Easter Sunrise service will be held at Milton Presbyterian Church in Rittman at 6:30 am as a union service. Rev. Raymond Gingrich of Akron Bible Institute will address the crowd with music by the Milton Presbyterian Church choir and Rittman High School male quartette.

Class Play Success Reported for RHS Junior Event

Miss Irma Maine, president of the RHS Junior Class, says the play Fathers Brews Best presented last Friday night was a success. After the show, cast members attended a party at the home of Mr and Mrs J J Williams.

Junior Teen Club Members Sought at School

Seventh and eighth graders are invited to join the Junior Teen Club. A drive is under way this week in the school led by Mrs. Richard Rupp who is helping organize the group. An executive meeting at Mrs. Rupps house named the club and set future plans including a hay ride, a dance with parents, roller skating and a ping pong tournament.

The newly formed RGTC club for freshmen invites 44 members to a roller skating party next Saturday at 7 p.m. at Wooster Roller Rink. Acting chair Terry Whims, acting secretary Tony Rupp, and acting treasurer Brenda Seebauer lead the effort with parent involvement encouraged as chaperones and advisors.
