Mrs. Robert Shook was first to report crocuses in her yard at 53 Washington with over a dozen blooms in white purple yellow and gold. Winds and rain revealed more blooms townwide the next day. Also noted are patients and births at local hospitals and a variety of visitors and travel plans.
Square dancing in Western style comes to Rittman city hall on Friday March 28 at 8 p.m. Grand Squares sponsors its first club dance open to all experienced dancers with 80 to 100 expected. Dick Mackey of Wooster calls as clubs Shirts and Skirts Sin gle 88 Swing-a-Lings Canton Portage Lake Squares Manchester Green Squares Green town and Gnat Boxers Wooster join. Public invited to watch colorful costumes at the recreation department event.
Rittman Board of Education trims plans saving 6101 50 15 and awards bids for the new high school to C A King Orrville for 767 360 Swagler Creston for heating 194 581 plumbing 93 316 Wad sworth Electric 11 900 with kitchen elimination and a library move saving 41 165 in building costs The bond issue totals 1 225 000 with occupancy expected in September 1970.
The PTA plans a Saturday Fun Day Festival Auction on April 26 at Rittman High and North Street School. White elephants and large items accepted with a 12 percent consignment commission. For details contact Dale Widmer or Robert Anderson.
The Rittman Fire Department battled seven calls this week involving grass and trash fires. Doylestown aided on a grass fire late Tuesday. others included a 4 a.m. Packaging Corporation of America fire, a 2 p.m. Wednesday trash blaze at Joe McElwee farm, a 4:50 p.m. grass fire on South Main, a 6:30 p.m. Route 57 and River Styx grass fire, a 2:05 p.m. Sunday trash fire near the B&O tracks, and a 2:15 Sunday grass fire on Road 126 near the Zollinger gravel pit.
A public meeting is set for Friday at 8 p m by the Clean Up Paint Up Fix Up steering committee. Representatives from city clubs will attend and show slides of problem areas. Twenty barrels funded by Sinclair Valentine will be used for trash collection.
Mrs Dena Moyer announced demolition of the Ball property at 183 South Main and her adjoining burned buildings after a February 5 fire. She plans to move to Florida soon with her family and has no definite use for the vacant, condemned lots. Dominic Calabria of Dom's Bar at 191 South Main said demolition is complete on his lot with no current plans for its use.
Rittman High School band and concert choir earned superior ratings at district contests in Wooster. The 71 member band, directed by Dennis Antram, and the 60 member choir, led by Mrs. Carolyn Warren, advance to state contests April 19 in Marion. Plus obituary for Joseph P. Angelo, veteran and former pool room owner.
The Booster Club meets Monday March 31 at 8 pm at Williams Restaurant. William Shunkwiler of Warren will speak about his coaching career from 1952 at junior high to Orrville High and Warren Harding High School since 1965.
