The Brethren Church on First Street reports nightly capacity audiences with chairs in aisles. Evangelist Dr. Bame commends audience attentiveness after 20 years in ministry. Upcoming week features include a doctrinal talk and Sunday services ending with baptisms in the new baptistry.
The W B A social on Tuesday night drew about 75. Prizes went to Miss Mildred Smith best dressed female, Mrs Hazel Peterson best dressed male, Mrs Wm Ruehlin most comical female, Miss Celia Holm most comical boy, and Little Evelyn Joy Weiss won the child’s prize. Dancing and cards followed, green and white decor, menu of ice cream cake and coffee, with proceeds around $35.00.
More than 100 members have joined the Wadsworth Automobile Club, a branch of the Akron Automobile Club. Headquarters are in the Albrecht block with a woman in charge. The club operates gas oiling tires and mechanical service stations. A prior local club existed, but Akron members revived this movement.
The ladies of St Ann's church announce a bake and fancy work sale at the Opera House lobby next Saturday March 15. Proceeds support church activities and local charities.
Carl Fry’s Ford touring car caught fire on Sterling road Monday evening as he returned from Wooster. The blaze, likely from a short circuit, led Fry to abandon the vehicle and head for town. Marshal Mills and Straub Quimby fought the flames, preventing a gasoline tank explosion that could have endangered Joseph Pipe and Frank Yarman’s properties adjacent to Anthony Gardner’s home.
Ashland College Girls Glee Club will broadcast a program from Westinghouse Station KDKA Pittsburgh at 2 45 PM March 16 1924. They will sing at Brethren Church East Liberty that evening as part of a Southern Ohio and Pennsylvania tour. The club aims to be among first to have a college girls glee program broadcast by a major station. The Pittsburg program will include readings and vocal numbers.
The county auditor reports semi annual tax distribution allocations for Milton Township and Rittman plus local school districts. Milton Township funds total 6 178 41 for general and 18 858 24 for school purposes. Rittman receives 13 197 75 with 27 252 83 for schools. Funds support movements and school work. officials note no dire strain.
A petition circulated in Aston shows 90 percent of local property owners support electric service for factory workers. The source of power remains unclear as nearby towns Rittman and Doylestown already have electricity from separate providers, both roughly equidistant from Easton.
The Rittman Business Men's Association held a Tuesday meeting in the council chambers. Committees were appointed for advertising membership social and more with a community sale planned next month pending detail work. The daily elected president is B. G Hamilton with Q. M. Spade as vice president and F. B. Hanasia as secretary treasurer.
At the Wayne Ashland tournament held at Ashland College last Friday the local Wayne County scholastic team was the sole county high school to reach the semifinals. Rittman was eliminated by Lucas by a single point behind Palk’s team, with Mt Eaton also exiting early. Final standings show Ashland county teams in the top places as the locals finish behind Polk Lucas and Rittman.
Harold Sigler three year old son of Mr and Mrs Robert Sigler is at Akron Children’s Hospital and improving after tuberculosis in a spinal cartilage. He was admitted last Sunday and doctors expect he can go home next week but must wear a cast for a year. The family notes his care and hopes for a quicker recovery.
Automobile license tags will be 25 percent cheaper after April first and it is expected some cars will move from winter quarters to service. Presently tag sales are slow but after April first a few more tags will likely be purchased.
The high school boys and girls basketball teams enter the Wayne County tournament to be held at Wooster College gym. Fourteen girls teams and seventeen boys teams total twenty nine games will be played starting at 8 30 in the morning with all teams drawn by referees if a team withdraws others move up in order.
Ohio Public Utilities Commission schedules April 24 hearing on the Saum Miller Wooster to Cleveland bus line via Smithville Rittman Wadsworth Sharon Hinckley Parma. Applicants must prove public convenience. locals say service would be greatly appreciated and would ease Wooster travel.
Mrs Estelle Edwards mother of Mrs CoC Carruthers of this place died in Cleveland Wednesday last week. Funeral services were held at her sister Mrs A G Bowler 2644 Dartmoor Rd Cleveland Heights Friday with burial at Lakeview Cemetery. Mr and Mrs Carruthers attended the funeral and Mrs Carruthers spent most of last week in Cleveland.
The Creston Journal highlights its latest acquisition a Model No T4 Linotype with four matrix sets and ninety keys enabling 568 characters. The machine marks a modern advance in their typesetting, and the operators are pleased with its capabilities.
G D McIntyre ex mayor and former postmaster of Orrville died at his daughter Mrs Denver Burns home in Bryan Ohio on Sunday afternoon from heart trouble. He was a well known public spirited Orrville figure and his death shocked the community. He leaves a son in Orrville and a daughter at the Bryan residence. Mrs R V Fredrick of this place is a relative.
The women of the W C T U announce a bake sale at Ruckel's Grocery on Saturday March 29. Proceeds will support their charitable activities in the community.
The American Legion Auxiliary will hold a bake sale on March 15 at 1 30 p m at Ruckel's Grocery.
Taxpayers must file income tax returns by March 15 1924 or face penalties if required. Even those with no tax due may be liable for failure to file.
