Social Security Board cannot furnish 1944 earnings for tax

H C Schuette, Akron Social Security Office manager, explained that complete 1944 wage figures are not yet available for income tax use. He noted the board keeps wage records for insured workers, used to compute benefits on retirement or for families after death. Full 1944 earnings will be posted by July 1 after audits and postings from late 1944 wages.

Births reported at Wadsworth Hospital in February

A daughter Ruth Ann to Mr and Mrs Beecher Noble on Tuesday February 20 at Wadsworth Hospital. Twin daughters six pounds six and one half pounds to Mr and Mrs Fleming Huff Hickin allotment on Tuesday February 27 at home. Heffelman Will Names Two Sons as Executors

The will of Charles Heffelman Sr probate records show residue goes to sons Harry and Charles Heffelman as executors without bond after debts and funeral expenses. Mrs Curtis Fortner and her infant return home from Wadsworth Hospital. Beatrice Hawkins RN works for Dr Alexander and will keep house.

Rittman Planning Commission Names New Officers

The newly formed Rittman Planning Commission convened at City Hall with Mayor John W. Baldwin as chairman and Ralph Overholt as secretary. Members include Christian E. Rhonemus F O Kanehl and K W Osborne. The group discussed projects to improve the community and each member’s local contributions and background are noted.

Orrville Man Named County Service Officer for Veterans

Roy E. Horst, clerk of the War Price and Rationing Board at Orrville, was chosen Saturday as Wayne County service officer to oversee all matters for veterans of the two World Wars and the Spanish-American War. The Soldiers and Sailors Relief Commission, including Judge L. R. Critchfield, Jack Weber, and Elmer VanOver, announced the appointment.

County officials delay Horst pay until legislature acts

County commissioners say Horst’s status will stay indefinite until the state legislature clarifies the position of new county officers. They add they are not authorized to pay this officer from county funds at present.

Veteran service officer chosen after county meeting

At Wooster Court House representatives from county veterans organizations met Saturday to pick a full time service officer from six applicants. Horst was chosen. Roy, a World War I veteran and former commander of Frank E. Cook Post American Legion, will coordinate service officers and advise veterans on government contacts after discharge.

Soldier Home on 22 Day Furlough Faces New Posting

Sgt. Eugene Warrick returns home after eight and a half months in England and thirty five missions. He says he is glad to be home and wishes all the boys could join him. Jim Wenger, on furlough from radio school in Madison Wisconsin, has just graduated to Seaman first class radioman and will depart Sunday to Shoemaker California for assignment to a ship.

Three Wounded Men Recovering In War Hospitals

Army telegrams confirm Ben Wenger seriously wounded in India Burma China theater on January thirty first and treated in Ledo Assam after a skirmish with a squad of forty Japanese. S/Sgt John Winkler, wounded at Metz on November 9, 1944, reached Kennedy General Hospital Memphis awaiting hand surgery and furlough. T/Sgt Herald Mougay, with a shattered knee and leg wounds from Belgium, is in Ward 15B at Schick General Hospital Clinton Iowa and expects six months of operations. The incident occurred with the 483rd Reinforcement Company.

Raymond Hubacher Missing At Sea

Raymond Hubacher 28, son of Mr and Mrs John Hubacher of Sterling, listed missing in the line of duty Jan 29 in the Pacific area. A QM/3c Coast Guard, he trained at Grand Haven and served on a Liberty ship in the Pacific for 20 months. Parents asked not to reveal ship name. one brother in Merchant Marine, another in Marine Corps. No recent photo available.

Wooster College Victory Ship Named by Maritime Commission

The Maritime Commission will name one new victory ship after The College of Wooster. President Howard F Lowry announced the SS Wooster Victory is under construction at California Shipbuilding Corporation in Wilmington, California. The ship will be one of several 1945 vessels named for American colleges and universities.

Lt Delmont McAnallen Sweats Through Hot Battle With Japs

A Rittman man, Lt Delmont McAnallen, writes of leading his company into a Japanese held pass near a Philippine naval base. He describes severe casualties, a grenade and machine gun fire, and medics killed, followed by his return to a beachhead as reserve. The letter recalls the fear before landing and the toll of two days of dust and nerves.

Canning Sugar Ration Curtailed for 1945 Home Use

The Office of Price Administration announced stricter home canning sugar limits for 1945. Each person may obtain up to 20 pounds, with a family cap of 160 pounds, and no ration stamps will be valid for canning sugar. Allocations rely on local ration boards and an OPA need-based scale. Major reason cited is record-low sugar stocks for February since the war began. Coupons run through November and applications by Oct 31.

Pvt Alton Looser Declared Killed in Action

Pvt Alton Looser formerly of Rittman is declared killed in action January 20 in Luxembourg. A telegram to his wife Reba of Barberton confirms the death after being listed missing. He leaves a widow and three year old son Alton Jr. plus his mother Bertha in Barberton and siblings Mrs Don Adams and Virgil in Rittman.

Selective Service Board Frees Men Over Thirty

A Sunday news release states Selective Service Boards may induct men up to 83 years old, relaxing the prior 30 year age limit. Board No 2 says ongoing monthly calls could strain capacity unless age limits rise, with officials noting many factors in timing. Reserves Take Co-Championship in Orrville Dramatic Finish

In a wild Central Buckeye League finale at Orrville, Rittman handed Wooster a share of the title as Orrville defeated the Red Riders 30-14. Meelhig led Rittman with five first half points while Gadson and Pugh added early baskets. Second half balanced the play but Orrville held a 13-11 edge in the final two quarters.
