Kenneth Seebaurer defeated Dale Webster 7 5 to win the junior boys singles tennis tournament this morning. The final was hotly contested as Seebaurer overcame a 4 1 lead to win. Seven competitors entered the event conducted by Raymond Rogela.
The quarterly C C C enrollment for veterans will be conducted July 7, 1939. The quota will be filled without regard to public relief or relief agency certification. All other eligibility rules apply, including a six month discharge minimum and bans on administrative discharges.
Excavations started Tuesday for two new homes in Grandview blvd built by Jar-H-Hartel of Rittman and Forrest-REtlng of Barberton. Cellar excavations are underway and the houses are funded through FHA financing as part of a larger group of residences.
The Rittman American Legion baseball team defeated Massillon Merchants 7 to 1 for their first win of the season. Robert Schaad pitched, struck out 11, and allowed only one hit, pleased manager Schaad. Despite poor practice due to bad weather, the Legion played heads up baseball and aims to improve with more practice.
Forty to fifty committees and several hundred Akron post members outline the 21st Department of Ohio convention to be held August 29 to 22 with headquarters at the Mayflower Hotel. Attendance is expected at 12 000 to 15 000 as the Rubber Bowl hosts the drum and bugle corps contest and parade with 50 bands and other units.
Businesses in Rittman vary for the holiday with gasoline stations remaining open all day. The bank and post office close Tuesday, and mall delivery halts. The Abby and toad may be obtained at boxes. The Rittman Press offices are closed Monday and Tuesday for the holiday.
The Rittman Rotary Club met at noon at the Bo Church parlora to hear a report on the recent International Convention at Cleveland and to witness officer installations for the new club year. Incoming officers begin duties next week led by President HM Wohlet, Vice President C J Rhone nis, and Secretary Treasurer Ed Elsass.
Women from three Rittman churches attended an inspection of A. L. Ebert's model kitchen at the rear of the funeral home. Miss Dunnick and Miss Smith demonstrated appliances to groups of 10 to 15, cookies were baked, and refreshments of cookies ice cream and coffee were served to about 130 women. The kitchen is completed with furniture and curtains installed.
International All-Stars lost their opener 11-9 against the Ohio Boxboard Friday night at the recreation field. The Hastings Homecoming features a star lineup for the Homecoming tournament and a charity wrestling match between Joe Sherrick and Hastings town constable Joe Wellman.
Rittman attendees report Bob Feller shut out the Detroit Tigers with a single hit in Tuesday night action at Cleveland. Spectators include Bob Wenger Kelly Bell Bud Hoover Harry Schaad Bob Schaad V Grella and son.
Closing exercises for 115 children enrolled in the cooperating churches daily vacation Bible school were held Wednesday night at the Church of God with a capacity crowd in attendance. Certificates were awarded as the program of work learned during the three and a half weeks was presented.
Rittman Garden Club met Friday night at the home of Mr and Mrs H S Squibbs and heard a talk on Roses by a guest speaker identified as Mr White of Loyal Oak. Hostess Mrs Squibbs served refreshments of ice cream cake and coffee to 23 members present.
Mr and Mrs Harry Menegay of Sterling announce a son born Saturday morning June 24. Mr and Mrs John Wilson of Salt Street announce a daughter born Sunday June 33.

Village council at City Hall on Monday directs Engineer Stelter Wis to prepare tentative assessments for PWA improvements. Ordinances to be published. two weeks for protests. Assessments to be placed on fall tax duplicate. PWA estimates to final costs. Members absent include James Hile and Kenneth Osborne.
Rittman residents may see earlier mail delivery under a plan awaiting final confirmation from the Washington post office. Business mail would depart at 8 30 am with town delivery by noon. parcel post shifts to 1 pm weekdays and noon Saturdays. The plan doubles clerk and carrier time.
The Rittman Civic Association committee headed by A. J. Tucebardi met City Hall with local organization reps to plan a combined community picnic and celebration of PWA improvements. The August date is likely as committees are formed to finalize plans.
Frazier Buxton was arrested by Sheriff Heffelman and Deputy Fredrick on assault and battery charges and fined 100 dollars plus costs after a trial before Mayor Roy Baker. Bert Gordon faced intoxication and resisting officer charges with a 50 dollar fine and 25 dollars suspended, also before Mayor Baker.
