Forgotten Man Jean Nicolet Honored In Nicolet Week
Jean Nicolet, a French courier de bois and explorer who reached Green Bay and the Wisconsin River, is celebrated during Nicolet Week on Mackinac Island. His 1634 westward voyage with Jesuits linked Lake Michigan exploration to early French trade. A pageant by the Daughters of the American Revolution and Michigan Historical Commission recalls his life, diplomacy with the Winnebago and his death in the St. Lawrence in 1642.
