Government figures from the Commerce Department show the national income climbed about 16 percent from the previous year. Total income reached an estimated multiple billions with higher wages to labor and increased dividends.
The Rev KR Anderon Jardine, who blessed the Duke of Windsor's marriage to Mrs Walls Warfield, has resigned from his North of England pulpit. He states the resignation was not related to his involvement in the Dukes affair.
John L. Lewis and the Committee for Industrial Organization push a strike of 9,500 miners in Pennsylvania and West Virginia supplying coal to Bethlehem and Youngstown steel mills. In Anderson Indiana non union auto workers are shot, six CIO organizers arrested. About 10,000 CIO followers near Monroe Michigan rally to close a Republic Steel mill opened by local citizens.
James H. R. Cromwell husband of Doris Duke was held by Soviet secret police for almost two hours for taking pictures outside his hotel and the U S Embassy nearby. He was released after film development showed no danger.
National City Bank of New York and National State Bank of Newark celebrate 128th anniversaries. City Bank holds $1.9048 billion in assets and ranks third in the nation. The Lehigh Valley Railroad tells 90,000 workers it can no longer fund relief and group-insurance plans due to heavy taxes from the Railroad Retirement and Social Security acts.
Paris reports show French Treasury balances plunging to 13.3 million dollars after a 160.2 million defense loan flotation, signaling weakness in the franc and a likely need for nearly a billion dollars in new loans this year. In Georgia, voters upheld a 23 year old prohibition law by a vote of 102 929 to 94 652. A German rector questions obedience to Hitler as students refuse to carry out duced orders, and Spanish child evacuees in Mexico are noted along with Basque refugees.
Harry Frey will become superintendent of Creston schools while Mabel Bryan is promoted to Creston High principal. G W Jeandrevin shifts to Strausburg schools after a three year tenure. The board, at its Monday meeting, also plans a junior high curriculum with W I Plough and Paul Kinney as instructors.
President Charles F. Wishart of the College of Wooster is named to a state wide committee backing a proposed Ohio constitutional amendment on selecting judges. The plan would appoint judges from a three to five person list, with senate confirmation and a six year term before facing record versus no opponent. Knox Stewart of Coshocton and editor Ernest Harrison ally support, with Sidney Stewart among local speakers.

Paul Kirkpatrick of S Second Street and owner of a grocery pleaded guilty to a drunken driving charge. Judge Walter Mougey sentenced him to six months with five months suspended and a $300 fine with $200 suspended. He will pay costs and be on probation for one year.
Rittman schools seek high school pupils for a summer tutoring class. Superintendent Garver asks interested students to report to his office by Monday noon June 2. If enough sign up, a class will be held at the high school. otherwise sessions run at the tutor’s home. Costs are paid by pupils.
Milton township trustees credit residents for pushing road work and say Beach Grove road on Milton Canyon township line will be widened to enclose 226 feet and graveled after eight cement culverts are rebuilt. Supervisor Earley and helpers will then assist with last year’s unfinished projects including grading and tilling the back lot behind the post office and Norton grocery to create a parking area or park. Civic response urged to turn the site from an eyesore into a potential park or beautified space.

Sidney P Stewart joins the Rittman Press editorial staff this issue. Born in Nowell West Virginia he resides in St Clairs ville Ohio while attending Ohio State University School of Journalism. He succeeds Arthur Gossard who becomes sports and correspondence editor of the Ravenna record.

Milton Hill selected for the publicity department of Station WHK in Cleveland after applying with ten candidates. A June OSU journalism graduate, Hill previously wrote a daily radio column for the Ohio State Lantern.
