PPG Restores High Capacity Glass Tempering At Ford City Plant
PPG Industries rebuilt and put a large tempering line at its Ford City fabrication facility into service to meet rising demand for tempered safety glass. The line can exceed 10 million sq ft annually and handles odd sizes for homes and buildings, including 3 16 inch glass for sliding patio doors. It will also produce Herculite K safety glass up to eight feet wide and 11 feet long, with 30 to 40 new workers hired. The furnace, idle since 1956, cost 1 million to build and was upgraded by replacing heating parts and modifying the cooling section for architectural glass use. The process heats then rapidly cools glass to achieve strength and safety. tempered glass is three to five times stronger and crumbles into small particles when broken. Seventeen states require tempered safety glazing in hazardous locations.
