A Baltimore oriole becomes entangled in string in a low bush. Pete Lovrak climbs a step ladder to loosen the yarn after the bird struggles. No return of the bird is noted. Also reports births and hospital stays for local residents.
Rittman Chamber to request seven ten minute parking spots at city square and push for a two hour parking limit enforcement. Members favor more resident parking and discuss expanded toll free service to Wadsworth Wooster Doylestown and nearby towns. Roy Lutz announced brochure nearing completion.
City Manager Macaulay Gosney announces a six week program starting June 17 at Rittman pool. Daily hours cover beginner intermediate and advanced groups with adult evening sessions and lifesaving classes led by Marcia Robbins and guards Broadhurst Haskins Horner O Brien. Fees: $3 singles $5 for two. more than two from a family priced at $5 for first two and $1 for each extra.
The Rittman Police Department announces three patrolman openings following the resignation of Police Sergeant Larry Hudson who joins Summit County Sheriff's Office as deputy. Hudson served since April 1966 and was promoted to sergeant last December. His resignation takes effect June 16. City officials report six applicants have tested for the remaining two vacancies after the resignations of Kenneth King and Patrick Benchoff, with another test set for Tuesday June 11 at the city building.
Rittman High School band will perform and antique cars join a parade starting from Krogey parking lot through North Main Street and East Ohio Avenue to Strickland's lot. Fire trucks will siren and trophies awarded for best fire truck, second best, longest distance, and oldest car. Proceeds fund two fire department projects and community events.
Robert Pait maintenance superintendent at Morton Salt Company is named campaign chairman for the United Fund drive to begin this fall. He will form committees at a meeting planned in the coming month where budget requests will be discussed. Pait resides at 233 West Sunset with his wife Jean a West Hill School teacher and their children Diane and David along with Mrs Grace Balinger the mother of Mrs Pait.
Willard D. Shum Hilty died Sunday morning during church services at Milton United Presbyterian Church. Burial will be near Old Knapp Church where he contributed to restoration. He was a longtime Scout leader, earned the Silver Beaver Award, served as Neighborhood Commissioner, and was a trustee deacon and Sunday school teacher. He retired in 1966 from the Rittman post office after 30 years. He aided Old Knapp Church restoration and belonged to Rittman Historical Society. Surviving: wife Margaret mother Isa Hilty son James two brothers and three sisters and two grandchildren. The Rev. James E. Watt to officiate. Gillman Funeral Home in charge.
Recent fines and forfeitures listed include Rodney Patton Welch of Atwa ter for improper muffler fined 10 dollars and Lester E. Clason of West Salem for DWI fined 100 dollars plus costs.
A public hearing at city hall on Monday June 24 at 7 30 p m will consider a proposed Rittman trailer ordinance. It would restrict long term parked trailers to one unoccupied mobile home per rear yard and remove front yard obstructions to improve curb appeal. Hardship cases go to the Zoning Board of Appeals.
Fire department answered a call Sunday evening at Packaging Corporation of America. Fire crews arrived to assess a blaze at the PCA facility and prevent spread. No injuries reported, and the cause remains under investigation.
Seventy seven Rittman High School seniors will receive diplomas at a Thursday evening commencement. Ashland College athletic director Robert Brownson will speak on The Search for Truth. Ronald Woyat will present diplomas. Rotary Club funds and PTA scholarships awarded. Music and vocal selections highlight the ceremony.
Wayne County mobile chest X Ray Unit will be in Rittman Monday June 10 at Ohio Edison Building from 9 30 a m to 12 30 p m and 1 30 to 4 30 p m. Persons 65 years or older will be X rayed free. A nominal charge of 1 will be charged for all others.
