The Rittman board named 21 residents and officials to an educational study group to explain the 1,185,000 high school bond proposal for the November ballot. The panel aims to inform voters, review changes, and may be expanded to about 25 members as meetings begin in August.
A scramble for seats on Rittman City Council is set for fall. Three two year terms held by Bodager Gish and Kunkler expire. Kunkler seeks re election while Bodager and Gish have not filed yet. Three new candidates Griffith Bowman Angelo already filed. filing deadline with Wayne County board at Wooster is August 10.
Morton Salt workers returned to work after a two week stoppage following a Friday vote 91 to 83 in favor of ending the strike. Local 12081 of United Mine Workers District 50 accepted a new plan with raises 8 to 31 cents an hour, plus pay for a Fourth of July holiday and enhanced insurance benefits. The Rittman Plant walkout began July 2, the first strike there since 1941.
Friends of the Library, Inc will meet Thursday July 21 at the Rittman Public Library meeting room. The session starts at 7 p.m.
The Rittman Press notes a planned Carni Falk event in Rittman next week but cannot provide details at press time. Officials warn that information is scarce while predicting the affair will be bigger and better than ever.
Rittman High School marching band plans band camp at Hidden Hollow Mansfield August 28 to September 3. Students must register by August 1. camp fee is 24 dollars with deposits to Mrs Dysinger. Freshmen orientation moved up a week. transport details to be arranged with Mrs Jordan or Band Parents committee.
City council planned a special meeting Tuesday to buy the old post office site west of the Square for a new parking lot. Merchants would be assessed on a benefit basis to fund the facility. Selling the land to merchants outright was rejected.
William T. Creson remains eastern mills general manager and will oversee Rittman and Grand Rapids paper mill operations. Edward J. Graber becomes mid east carton general manager for Rittman and Cleveland operations, located here, with Kenneth P Kearcher as potential Rittman carton plant manager.
Mrs. Helen Schmidt, 77, died Tuesday after a long illness at the home of her daughter Mrs. De Bigler in Pinewood. Arrangements were pending at Gillman Funeral Home at press time.
A new camera store and studio titled On The Square will open in Rittman in the James Frye Building beside the Rittman Department Store. Brothers Joseph and Anthony Christian will run the shop as remodeling continues.
Negotiations on a new contract between Packaging Corpora tion of America and Local 150 of International Brotherhood of Pulp Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers AFL CIO will begin Friday. Anniversary date of the present agreement is August 1. bargaining usually starts about 60 days before. A Teamsters campaign to oust Local 150 delayed talks. An election June 7 gave Pulp Workers 555 to 361. Teamsters appealed alleging voter intimidation. a NLRB trial examiner recommended dismissal of the appeal.
Calabria was granted a 10 day continuance by Worcester Municipal Court. He faces a charge of defacing and destroying a street sign rooted out June 27 along Freed Ford Sterling Avenue. A July 25 hearing carries a maximum fine of 50 dollars.
Wayne County Joint Vocational School board advances a $1,955,000 bond issue for the November ballot. The plan includes an estimated 17 mills and federal and state matching funds of about $1.1 million. A site near Smithville is under review with a budgeted start figure around $2.4 million.
Dr. John R. Heter, principal of Rittman High School since 1959, will leave to become principal of Berea Senior High School. He earned a 1951 BS from Heidelberg College and a doctorate from Western Reserve University in eduction. He wrote a study that informed Ohio master school plan. His wife Janice is a Rittman teacher. The board also accepted Joan Lance Houglan’s resignation and outlined staffing needs before Sept. 8.
