Reported incidents at Rogues Hollow quarry near Doylestown drew caution over recent lawless activity. A 26 year old Ronald Harmon was slashed in a gang fight involving about 50 at the quarry. Six youths in a brown Pontiac followed four Rittman youths and robbed Virgil Pittman of over $60 before releasing them. Authorities say rumors of further fighting are unfounded and patrols continue by Wayne County Sheriff and Doylestown police.
Deadline for applications is Friday July 21 at 5 p.m. Applications accepted by City Clerk. Open to ages 21 to 35 with height 5 feet 9 inches and weight 175 pounds minimum. Salary range 5400 to 6200 after one year for 40 hours. Benefits include hospitalization insurance sick leave vacation and uniform allowance. Civil Service exam July 2 at 7 p.m. in City Hall council chambers.

At a 15-person meeting, Superintendent W H Hauenstein outlined a plan to upgrade the entire kindergarten through grade 12 system. The proposal, tied to North Central accreditation, would add classrooms and expand high school facilities including labs, industrial arts, home economics, music, art, and library spaces. Principal Thomas Spear urged early preparations as junior high evaluations loom.
Rittman department store sold to Kenneth and Kathleen West effective Sept 1. James Moore, former owner, announces the transfer and will join Stahley-Stillson Inc in Napanee Indiana while maintaining local interests. Moore and his wife Barbara and children Jenni fer, Margaret and John plan to move to Napanee around Sept 1.
Incumbents and hopefuls line up as eight local terms end this year in Rittman with filing deadlines looming. Mayor Ashton Hall has filed for re election while two councilmen William Forrer and William Holt say they will not run. Ed Musser is undecided. Board of education members Robert West and Robert Stoll seek re election with Stoll filing and West absent comment. Milton Township Trustee C G Hadulk and clerk Paul Baker also filed their respective candidacies.
A children’s matinee and nightly prizes from 50 to 500 will highlight Carni Fair at Tickland’s Garage Grant Street July 26 29. Richard Hummel chairs the committee. proceeds fund new fire equipment and Easter egg hunt sponsorship.
Camil Wald, born in Alsace Lorraine and a veteran of the German army, dies at 106 in Rittman Ohio. A shoemaker turned farmer, he voted in every election since 1895 and remained active in life, golf, and television. Survived by his son Ernest and a large extended family, his funeral was held at St. Ann Church.
Kroger Company renovates interior to increase product space by about 20 percent. Store manager Richard Ingman says shelving is being redesigned to deepen and rearrange displays and a new shelving row will be added. The project aims for completion by August 1.
