Local Firms Give To College Fund
Two Rittman firms are among 1282 Ohio businesses contributing to the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges during the year ending May 31. Packaging Corp. of America and Rittman Savings Bank are the contributors. The College of Wooster received a check for $35,372 as its share of $1,001,022 contributed, bringing Wooster’s total from OFIC to $287.02 since joining. The gift is tied to an endowment nearly $1,000,000, and President Howard Lowry called OFIC a key source of operating money.

A Florida firm builds high towers for communications with 250 foot structures behind the Ohio Central Telephone Co in Rittman. Owner Bill Ellis, his crew of six, and foreman Cochise Rogers live a peripatetic, high altitude lifestyle. Ellis, a University of Michigan alumnus, started as an apprentice and now ensures safety and skilled wages at two to three hundred dollars weekly plus overtime. Peggy Ellis, his wife, notes this is “a way of life” as they travel to new sites across the country with the monster tower crane and a tight unit that works high above the ground.

Car Hits Depot as Driver Is Cited in Court
Olin H Kitts aged 22 of 28 Salt Street faced charges of reckless driving after his car struck the Erie Depot baggage cart and a fuel tank at 4:45 am Thursday. The vehicle was a total loss but Kitts escaped injury. In other court dispositions this week Mayor Houglan fined Lester Wiles 29.50 for intoxication, Ray C French 29.50 for intoxication plus 25 for assault, Eldora Rezac 29.50 for intoxication, Finley Lee Thompson 14.50 for speeding, Thomas E. Rupp 1.50 for speeding, Fate L. Cook 9.50 for speeding.

Candidates begin passing petitions for City Council and School Board posts in Rittman this week. Three school board seats are open with incumbents Maus and Wilmot planning to run again, Norhk Reffert undecided. Council seats and the mayoral race are on the November nonpartisan ballot. Banders Kinch Melenbacker and Hall likely seek re election, Bernhardt and Zivick decline. A Houglan is the only mayoral hopeful.

Committee to Name Successor to Joseph Graber
A three member Wayne County committee will select a successor for the late County Commissioner Joseph Graber who died after a gunshot wound. Graber, a Democrat, served his first term and was well known in the Rittman Sterling area. Funeral services were held at Oak Grove Mennonite Church. The committee includes County Auditor Earl Lautenschlager Probate Judge Myron Brenneman and Recorder Ruth Williams.

Bloodmobile Arrives with Strong Donor Turnout in July Visit
About 160 donors, many first time, signed up for Red Cross Bloodmobile appointments for next Monday July 10. Co chairmen Minnie Bodager and Lugille Varisco praised response to recruiters but warned that last minute cancellations and no shows could cut the total. Planning Commission to seek federal aid for Rittman plan
The Planning Commission met in special session to apply for 2000 dollars annually for three years to fund a comprehensive growth plan for Rittman. Nicholas Kaschak, chief planner, submitted the study outline from the state division, with the city to match funds if approved. The plan covers land use, transportation, facilities, finance, land subdivision, zoning, and regulations over a three-year period.

A two car crash near Wooster sent five people to Wooster Hospital including Arthur Scott 60 of Rittman and Susan Scott 57 with injuries. George Zeglen of Cleveland was cited for failure to observe a stop sign after his car struck the Scotts at Route 5 and Portage Road.
