Roads and the rise of the road engineer in 1910
In early road building the lay contractor judged stone and deemed it enough to engineer roads. By 1910 universities offered graduate courses in highway engineering and highway transport, leading to master of science degrees. Classes drew 27 to 32 year olds from federal, state, municipal agencies, contractors, manufacturers, and universities. The road building world seeks trained engineers rather than untrained hands, arguing that permanent, economical highways require expert practice.
