Water outage hits 30 families after hydrant failure in Rittman
A Sunday accident damaged an old fire hydrant in the Main and Grant Streets area leaving about 30 families without water. Repairs required an obsolete 8 inch bolt, delaying service until Wayne College supplied help within 24 hours. City officials shifted to temporary methods as Morton Salt offered a similar bolt but could not deliver until Tuesday. By Monday evening, crews connected the hydraulic line, restoring water access. Additional notices report local meetings and school games for January.

W-R Hospital Auxiliary Elects New Officers
The Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital Auxiliary held a January 20 meeting at Cleckner's Restaurant and elected officers including Mrs. William Raftry as president and Mrs. Mark Friedley as vice president. Five Rittman ladies were named to represent the group at the Ohio Hospital Association meeting in Cleveland. A $250 donation from Firestone Bank was noted and plans discussed for televisions in patient rooms.

Area Tutoring Programs Grow Across Local Schools
Rittman schools began a tutoring program in 1974 with one full time tutor at the elementary level. The program expanded to provide full time tutors in each building and several Title I tutors, supported by a 45370 budget with state and federal subsidies. Other districts like Orrville and Smithville sustain multiple tutors and varying budgets.

The Board of Education acted to a temporary appropriations plan of 2,157,60210 while adjusting expected revenues and cuts. Superintendent Larry Stucky said a higher tax duplicate adds 28,500 to local funds, allowing trimming of 36,000 from planned cuts and preserving textbooks and some equipment funding. He noted cooling issues in North Street and Middle School buildings, with bathrooms and gyms affected, and announced a February meeting in Cleveland. The board also approved the remodeling of the First Street cafeteria as the lead project of the 18 mill permanent improvement levy.

Two Sentenced In PCA Bomb Threat Case
Frederick M Coleman announced Joseph Francis Straley and Calvin Eugene Damron pleaded guilty to a single bomb threat count against PCA in Rittman Ohio. Federal Judge Thomas Lambros sentenced both to two years probation under 18 USC 5010a Youth Corrections Act. FBI investigated threats from May 1973. prosecution by Clarence B Taylor.

Cochran Refuses to Surrender New Hampshire Fort
From the Pennsylvania Packet of January 1775. An extract from Portmouth New Hampshire dated December 16 describes an express from Boston claiming two regiments were marching to take the fort. Captain Cochran refused surrender, fired on attackers, and powder was seized. Authorities in Portsmouth debated the incident as townsfolk gathered with a governor and council considering the threat.
