Drawings Made For Annual Sports League Tournament

The annual league basketball tournament at Doylestown, January 22 24 30 and February 1, drew teams into two brackets with no seeding. Top and bottom bracket teams include Apple Creek Dalton Shreve Chester Sterling West Salem Doylestown Mt Eaton Fredericksburg and Burbank. Games start 7 30 pm with one hour per game. Semifinals on January 30, finals February 1.

Indians Face Orrville Lodi This Weekend

Rittman High Indians seek their third Buckeye league win as they travel to Orrville Friday to play the Red Riders, who struggle this season with one win in eight starts. Henry Tompkins is out with an infected foot. Lodi visits Rittman Saturday for a second game, with junior reserve prelims both nights at 7 30 p.m.

Harrison Named Chairman President's Ball Committee

Ernest Harrison of Rittman is named chairman to arrange the President's Ball in Wooster Tuesday night. Final plans will be announced soon. The committee includes local WFIP officers and Wooster figures. proceeds support the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis with half kept locally for treatment and equipment.

Kenneth Kurtz Plans Dairy Store In Smithville

Kenneth Kurtz of Rittman will open a dairy store with a lunch counter in Smithville. The opening is tentatively set for February 1, with remodeling ongoing and Kurtz planning a full line of dairy products. He will live with his grandmother, Mrs. Rachel Kurtz, in Smithville after the store opens.

Civil Service Exam At High School Saturday

A civil service examination for the substitute carrier clerk position at the Rittman post office will be held Saturday morning at the high school. E. O. Franks, secretary of the local civil service board, will be the examiner. The test starts at 9 am. report by 8 30 am. About 12 applicants are expected to take the exam due to increased volume of business.

Karl Elliot and Richard Dayton of Doylestown were included in a group of 13 Wayne county boys accepted for CCC service at Canton Monday according to an announcement by the Wayne County Welfare Department.

Roast Pig Banquet At Legion Meeting In Rittman

The Rittman American Legion held its regular meeting Tuesday night in Legion rooms with a roast pork dinner as the feature. Thirty two attended the banquet served at 6 30 p m. John Wenger was in charge of obtaining and preparing the roast pig for the banquet.

Agricultural Conservation Institute Held Tuesday in Wooster

Wayne County Agricultural Conservation Association hosts an institute for farmers wives and business men on Tuesday January 23 with two sessions at 9:30 am and 10 am in Wayne Theatre Wooster. Ernest Saal Barn Destroyed By Fire

Early Tuesday night a fire destroyed the Ernest Saal barn just east of Rittman with damages about 4500 dollars. Insurance partly covered the loss. All horses and cattle were saved except two heifers. Milton township fire truck fought the blaze but could only protect nearby structures.

Derailment Blocks Erie Line Near Western Star

A freight train derailment near Western Star about three miles east of Wadsworth derailed 21 cars on the eastbound run Tuesday at 1 30 am blocking both main tracks. Through trains were detoured via the Baltimore and Ohio line between Barberton and Sterling while crews cleared the wreckage. Officials did not know the cause or extent of damage though some cars reportedly carried live stock and logs had to be shot to stop rolling debris.

Electric Scoreboard Installed Friday in Rittman Gym

The Rittman board of education installed a new electric scoreboard and timer for the Rittman Millerboro game Friday night. It will be placed in the gym’s southwest corner for visibility, with illuminated figures and clock face. The old board may move to the east side to aid stage spectators.

Ministerial banquet draws Wayne County clergy

Rev E 8 Hendrickson of Rittman attended the Wayne County Ministerial Association dinner Monday at the First Evangelical and Reformed church in Wooster. Guest speaker Rev Thomas L Coyle of Sherwood Presbyterian Church Washington DC urged a unified energetic campaign for the kingdom of God in his address Lightning War. Forty four persons attended the banquet with Rev A W Meckstroth of Apple Creek presiding.

Phonewus attends Western Reserve Law Institute at Rhonemyus of Rittmen for practical and notations sponsored by Western Reserve University. The all day event was at the Allerton Hotel in Cleveland with an annual sponsor dinner in the evening. Bedtissey, president of the African Bar Association, was the guest speaker.

Community Fund Accepts Heffelman Resignation

Rittman community fund trustees accepted Harry Heffelman's resignation as a committee member at Monday night's City Hall meeting. Heffelman left Saturday to take a position with the National Paper Box Co in Kansas City. A vacancy on the committee will be filled after the committee decides the proper procedure. The panel also reviewed several relief applications.

Charles Shook Services Conducted Wednesday

Funeral services for Charles Shook 79 pioneer of Rittman were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Acme church three miles northwest of Rittman with burial in Acme cemetery. Survivors include two sons Clifford and other sons-in-law, three daughters Mrs Baranigan Mrs Beather Hawking and Mrs Fay Fulton of Akron.

Senator James E. Murray will headline Wayne county’s eighty fifth Jackson Day Celebration set for Thursday night January 25 at Zion Lutheran church in Wooster. Rittman Board Hires Truant Officer and Auditorium Plan

The Rittman board of education hired William Rike as truant officer at a salary of 6.4 monthly plus carex, replacing R. E. McCoy. They discussed auditorium issues at the high school for town basketball and ordered study of renter fees, with a report at the next meeting. The clerk was asked to send a sympathy card for Shook’s father and to survey lighting and building repairs at the First building. Regular bills were authorized for payment.

Village Council Discusses WPA Sewer Project

Village council met in special session at City Hall Friday night to consider a WPA sewer project. Plans include new sewers on Diagonal, Second, Walnut, and Grandview streets and the Ganyard area, with city engineer to prepare cost estimates and present them. The council also authorized four ordinances for railroad wage and street department staff and renewed the Travelers Nobility Policy for three years after state examiner concerns. The council will reconvene Monday at 7 30 p m.
