Escaped Inmate Found Wandering Near Apple Creek

An escapee from the Feeble Minded Institute of Apple Creek was found on Sterling Avenue last Thursday afternoon. He spent Wednesday night in a farmer’s barn, identified by clothing markings, and was jailed by Marshal Heffelman until authorities arrived Friday morning.

Roadhouse Operator Held on Closing Hours Violation

Frank Peters proprietor of a roadhouse at Routes 6 and 4 southeast of Rittman was jailed Sunday after Sheriff Ed Mills and staff visited at about 2 a.m. Peters holds a 3.2 beer license but the place should close at 1 a.m. Charges to be decided at a Monday conference with Sheriff Mills and Prosecutor Raymond Morgan. About 45 people were in the roadhouse at the time.

Wald Aids and Red Cross Knit at City Hall

Red Cross knitting and sewing sessions continue each Monday at 2 PM in City Hall. Charles Wald volunteers to coordinate at his Salt Street store, and helpers are asked to include the wearer’s name and garment size when turning in sweaters.

Clinton defeats Rittman 44 31 as Dennison leads Clinton with 23 points while Riggs tops Rittman with 13. Clinton Reserves post a 27 16 win as Petkoff leads scorers with 10. Sterling leads late with a short court field goal to seal the win. Rittman reserves extend streak to seven with a 35 17 victory. Sterling Merchants beat B W Freet 42 38 in a fourth quarter rally.

Indians fall as Sterling rallies to edge Rittman 34 33

Rittman High Indians led 24 16 at halftime and 30 24 after three quarters but Sterling Eagles exploded in the fourth for a 34 33 win on the Sterling Tour. Milford and Marbach fueled the Eagles with early 11 point first half and four field goals respectively. The fourth quarter featured rapid fire scoring and many floor scrambles as the lead changed hands.

England Plumbing Shop Sold to Warrick Family

H. E. Warrick of West Park Street purchases the England plumbing business on South Main Street. The Warricks plan to operate as the Warrick Plumbing and Heating and will handle furnaces and a general plumbing line. They will move into the apartment above the shop on Main Street.

Dr M E Stilwitt denied rumors of an Army call, stating he had not received any service notice or draft paperwork. The clarification ends speculation about an imminent departure from Rittman.

The village of Rittman is listed among Wayne County subdivisions receiving tag fund distributions totaling 1,553,727 dollars. Fredrick Named Street Commissioner in 1941 Budget Plan

The council, in its first 1941 meeting, appointed Fredrick to the street commissioner's post at 1200 dollars yearly and named Frank Schlup president pro tem and CFE Rhonemus solicitor. They also hired assistants to the street commissioner and civil engineer, with salaries set, and reappointed Wenger to the park board. An appropriation ordinance outlined funds for 1841, including general, safety, water, street maintenance, and bond retirement. Public utilities chairs were renamed and a plan allowed trimming ten street lights for one year.

Rittman Boys Enlist in CCC Camps After Exams

Trilobite Fossil Found at LeRoy Sand Pit

Clair Stutzman found a trilobite fossil at the LeRoy sand pit in 1924. The fossil proved interesting to the biology class of Principal W H Hauenstein as it illustrates an animal living on earth about 150 million years ago.

County Budget Sets 224 Million for Roads Bridges

Wayne county commissioners completed the county budget at a Saturday meeting setting up 224,502,277 for the county road and bridge fund. Funds will come from gasoline and automobile tag revenues, not from local tax income.

Draft Call Takes Eight Local Men

Wayne County Selective Service Board No 2 prepares to send 35 men to Cleveland for army training with four volunteers from Rittman and four draftees leaving January 22. Wayne County Grange year end membership reached 1884 with 191 new members. Sugar Grange led county scoring 80 percent in the annual inspection while Ritiman Grange ranked second with BY points.
