The Fourdeinier paper machine, introduced over 150 years ago, pioneered mechanized papermaking and mass production. The showcased device highlights early pulp technology and the evolution of paper manufacturing machinery.
Ohio Boxboard Company representatives join the New York meeting of the Technical Association of Pulp and Paper at Stamford Connecticut and hear about the 10 foot long Midget Fourdrinier the world’s smallest paper making machine. Attendees include Lewis Burnett Russell Lewis Lloyd Whims Ed Stentz James Higgins and Burnett’s wife Mrs wo Stess Le TAGher. The event draws 6100 members from over 700 mills for the annual convention amid demonstrations by Alfred I Peiker and Cyanamid researchers.
Rittman Indians will play Wadsworth high school Friday February 26 in Rittman auditorium at 7 pm. On Saturday they will play at North Canton high school. The Friday and Saturday games close the regular schedule before the Ashland tournament. A Wooster College freshmen game was cancelled due to a league rule barring high school teams from college play.
Miss Lucille Carroll of Wooster will direct activities for the Future Teachers of America initiatory service on Wednesday at 7 30 p m in the Rittman high school auditorium. She is an English teacher at Wooster High School and a June candidate for classroom teachers presidency of the National Education Association. she has long been active with the NEA and has led the Ohio Classroom Teachers association.
Core and Wilk announce the Doylestown High School Band annual concert on Tuesday March 2 at 8 pm in the auditorium. Guest soloist Dean Marshall trombonist with the Canton Symphony. Tickets available from any band member or band mother.
Local Red Cross fund drive leaders include Mrs E F Bernhardt of 21 Fairmont Ave and Mrs Robert Bodager of 22 Hillcrest Ave serving as co chairs. Wayne County chair is Paul Murrill of Wooster College with many Rittman and Easton volunteers aiding canvass efforts and an annual Red Cross tea planned for Feb 27.
Cancer drive in Rittman asks residents and firms to contribute this week. Only one third of the $1,750 goal has been raised so far with eight residence captains reporting and partial business district results. Donations may be sent to Mrs K W Osborne or Mrs Gwaltney or left at Rittman Savings Bank.
Miss Virginia Wenger daughter of Mr and Mrs R D Wenger of South Main Street was chosen as representative to Girls State in Columbus in June by the American Legion Auxiliary at their regular Monday session. Officers and members listed include Mrs W W Budager initiatory officer, Mrs Rollin Jones president, Miss Ruth Wald chaplain, Mr S Richard O Brion, Mrs Bob Bote, Mrs Mildred Adams, Mrs Esther Jarvis with refreshments by Wel in charge.
Local women will volunteer Wednesday at the Red Cross Bloodmobile stationed at the American Legion Home on East Sunset Drive. They include canteen and luncheon teams from three Rita churches, with hostesses and a motor corps unit organizing volunteer shifts and transportation. Ninety donors are scheduled to give blood.
St Ann’s Catholic church young women form St John’s Study-Club in honor of Fr. John T Farrell who served 20 years. Mrs Donald Kimes elected president with officers Mrs Donald Beery secretary Mrs Jamies Pereira and Mrs Clarence Kindiz treasurer. February shrine to the Holy Family. monthly meetings set for the fourth Tuesday in members’ homes. Hostess duties noted for March 23 at Mrs Bowen’s home 134 West Hub.
Orla Houglan stood trial at Masonic Lodge 715 F and AM in Akron on an assault and battery charge. Eugene Harris, immediate past master, was hospitalized for a week after the incident. A twelve member jury found Houglan not guilty.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Holsberg of Bellevue Ave were called to Lebanon Pa Tuesday Feb 16 due to the fatal accident of his brother William Holsberg who died from third degree burns in an industrial accident Funeral services were conducted last Friday afternoon The Holsberg family then received word that a great nephew Path Griffith who had served as pallbearer at the same funeral had been killed instantly in a car crash His wife and a companion were hospitalized He leaves three children under six A mock trial about a lodge dispute was held with attorneys from Akron Wooster and Orrville acting and witnesses testifying The scene showed Harris accused of displaying his picture too prominently in a lodge room leading to a quarrel and injury The event included a judge and bailiff portrayed by local lawyers and drew public lodge interest
Harris Printing and Lithograph of Citmitston West Virginia sold to Rittman Press. The purchase includes seven printing machinery and assets. A liquidation sale is planned on the premises with the existing linotypes and related equipment to be shipped to Rittman.
Wayne County Easter Seal drive kicks off March 18 to April 28 with Mayor John Baldwin chairing the local committee and Rotary clubs backing the effort. The plan includes housing development, street and sewer work, and boundary expansion proposals for the village. Council debates funding responsibilities for insurance and equipment while considering storm sewers and a new police car.
Missionary Dr Good, long in Africa and an authority on the Bulu language, will be guest speaker at the World Day of Prayer observance in Sterling Friday March 5 at 7 30 pm. He will show mission slides and discuss his work plus present Birds of French Cameroun and a West African dictionary project. The event, under Church Women’s Council, carries the theme That They May Have Life from John 10 10.
Rittman Junior High defeated Loudonville 44 to 29 to advance to the finals. The winner meets Millersburg, the defending champion, at 3 p.m. Saturday in Orrville for the league title after a strong first-half lead.
Memorial Park receives a $1000 donation from the Lions Club to support park improvements. Park Board members Crug McCartney and Richard Bryan announce the contribution and note further fundraising efforts by the Lions International counselor and local officers. A variety show by the Doylestown High School Auditorium is planned to raise additional funds.
