The Wooster Daily News reprints an editorial urging Rittman voters to close three licensed saloons. The piece tallies county costs from 1915 1916 including jail days grand jury and coroner fees totaling about 2294 74 and argues licenses do not cover losses from crime and harm to the village and county.
Martin Hoover purchased the Peter Whitman 164 acre farm south of Wooster at the courthouse sale for 16 900, 600 over appraisal. Whitman’s Chippewa township farm of 145 acres went to WO Whitman for 14 225, 2 075 over appraisal, and the Doylestown property sold for 1 000.
The council met in regular session Monday evening with the mayor, clerk, and all councilmen present. Routine business was transacted and several matters discussed, with bills ordered paid. No other important business was transacted.
T Frank Hanes mayor of Rittman issues a proclamation ordering saloons closed on February 27 1917 under state Inns requirements as the village readies to vote on prohibiting alcohol sales. The document is dated February 20 1917 and bears the mayoral seal.
About 25 stockholders attended the meeting in the Seberger block with 40 proxies. J L Warpster was elected chairman and State Representative Karl E Hoover was secretary. Nine directors were chosen by ballot: R V Frednek To Werns JH Smith WM Brenneman J L Harpster JC Young F J Jones Karl E Hoover and C W Hoover. A meeting of treasurers will be held soon to appoint officers.
In a Monday night match at Ideal Bowling Alley Ohio Salt Co and Ohio Boxboard Co drew an enthusiastic crowd. Boxboard winner Cummings led with 470 in three games while Salt Co’s Goffinet posted 541 to secure a 112 pin victory. Milford’s high score last week reached 268 with two games averaging 223.
In Rittman Ohio an assistant engineer conducted a water supply survey on January 25. Samples showed excellent sanitary quality but high iron content. aeration lowers iron. Investigation finds the village has a satisfactorily developed system per state health board standards.
The Sebring plant manager visits Mr and Mrs Hoover on Sterling Avenue, with Mr Piaeth from the Strong Manufacturing Company in Sebring, Ohio. He rose from bottom to business manager by August, aiding a growing enamel yard business as Sebring evolved from a new site to a bustling town with trolley lines, houses, and stores.
The young people's class of the Presbyterian church hosts a box social at Schorger's Hall next Tuesday evening to raise funds for the pina fund. Music by Miller's eight piece orchestra accompanies the event with continuous activities until after the movies. Prizes include a $3.50 leather cushion for the most artistic box. generous refreshments and a free coffee option.
The administrator of Juro Kaskowag Kuske files for $50,000 damages against the Erie Railroad Co in common pleas court at Wonster after Kuske was struck by an object protruding from a freight car while walking near the Ene railroad track on October 9 1916. Kuske left a wife and four children. he was a laborer earning three dollars a day.
A notice states that from Monday February 26 the signer will handle the transfer trade of Bittman. The message is signed P. EB. Geiser and includes a brief business intent.
Al Kunkler died at his home in Wadsworth at 2 a.m. Sunday from effects of a paralytic stroke. A former Rittman resident, he had been an engineer at Wadsworth Milling Co and lived in Rittman about ten years ago. He leaves three sons and a daughter. his wife perished in a fire 11 months earlier.
Charles Eshelman is murdered in a back road ambush near Wooster. Landis, a neighbor, admits planning to elope with Eshelman’s wife and firing from behind as Eshelman walked from his home to work. A rifle shell evidence ties Landis to the crime. funeral held at U B Church. investigation continues for accomplice arrest.
A House vote of 321 to the Senate led to an amendment barring liquor into prohibition areas for beverage purposes. The federal action becomes effective July 1 and will add states to the dry list.
Governor Jamey Cox signed the Reynolds bill at 3 20 yesterday giving Ohio women full voting rights with men for presidential electors.
