Local columns note love found in everyday meetings at the Office each evening. Rations, old vs new, license plate changes, and Salvage mat drives reflect wartime thrift. A boy in Chanute and a dog at 8 o clock illustrate daily life. Rev Carey’s visit yields a toddler quip about growth.
Two Rittman High School seniors and three Sterling High School juniors shared prizes from the Ritman Press for the two schools selling the most subscriptions in a three week drive ending Monday. Winners included Pebera Adams and Teene Kott tying for first with 16 subscriptions each. Rennen Palmer next with 16. Subscriptions included renewals, with bonuses on every five dollars of new or renewed sales.
Rittman high school will host its annual spring band concert in the auditorium on March 27. Supervisor of music Jack Coy announced efforts to secure L W Chidister of Western Reserve University as guest director. Proceeds fund further music work in the schools.
The United Brethren Church announces Lenten evangelistic services from March 2 to 15 led by Dr. Dewey Whitwell of Nashville Tennessee. Whitwell, a leading evangelist, will conduct daily 7:30 p m sessions with adult choir and youth glee club. He travels from Corry, Pennsylvania where he is currently conducting services.
About 476 men were registered over the weekend in the nation’s third draft call at the Justice of the Peace office in Sherrick. Registrants included several father and son pairs and veterans from prior service.
Rotarians heard RE Cartlidge of Midwest Rubber Reclaiming Co detail rubber shortages and the shift to reclaimed materials. He cited US Army tests cutting crude rubber by 18 percent and warned of a 1942 shortfall while urging future reliance on guayule and regional processing proposals. Dr OJ Shong chaired the session.
Mrs E G Newberry announces a new yarn shipment for the Rittman Red Cross knitting group and invites local women to join Monday sewing and knitting meetings in the city building. A widow born November 30 1819 died October 10 1900 aged 80 years 19 months and 10 days, date of birth undetermined.
The War Production Board mandates a 40 percent cut in tin can production, scrapping small and non essential cans for beer tobacco dried beans and gag foods. A ban on new trucks and trailers extends to February 28 with direct auto delivery for prime war contractors and safety officials. Vitamin A use is restricted to protect Air Corps supply.
The Rittman Civilian Defense Council will conduct a second air raid signal test at noon Saturday. Fire Chief Everet Winkler will supervise the test with intermittent blasts from the fire whistle and a follow up 30 second Ohio Salt Company whistle blast called the Clear signal. Residents are asked to cooperate and report audibility location and the Clear signal. A drill for C D organization members will be scheduled on a pre announced date.
The United Brethren church held a Sunday dedication for a new octagon pulpit gifted by charter member George W Holm. Rev W E Price led the service with Holm participating. the Schants Organ Company of Orrville built it and a bronze donor plate will be attached.
C E Rhonemus executive director of the Rittman Civilian Defense Council asks for a registered Red Cross First Aid instructor to teach a class for men and community members. A current 20 person class meets Thursdays with a Wooster instructor, but no local trainer is secured yet. Interested qualified individuals should contact Rhonemus at once.
St Ann's Catholic church of Rittman will hold Lenten services on Wednesday and Friday evenings at 7 30 p m through Easter in addition to regular Sunday services Father John T Farrell announced today The first special service was held Wednesday evening in the church.
Mrs RV Fredrick deputy registrar for Rittman and vicinity and Mrs Thresa Wolfe Leatherman visited Ashland this week to announce the 1942 auto tag sale begins March 1. Drivers may apply now for special license quotes and local registrars will issue truck tags in each county. Old plates to be saved and returned in a box at registrar offices.
A directed verdict for the defendant closed the Common Pleas case of Jeannette Wagner of Wooster against Hugh Strickland on an automobile damage claim. Judge Walter J Muughey dismissed after plaintiff testimony and ordered the jury to sign for the defendants.
The Rittman Community Fund board voted to invest 505 in United States Defense Bonds at a city hall meeting. W A Silvwill, chairman, stated the unanimous decision and plans to store the bonds in the Mayor's office for safekeeping in the city building.
Joe McElwee of Rittman has been transferred from the Panama Canal Zone to Aruba Island in the West Indies. He serves in the personnel division of the U S Army Air Corps stationed there.
The Rittman Church of Christ announces a two week evangelistic series starting Sunday morning led by Rev O W Williams of McArthur as state evangelist. He speaks Sunday morning on Christian Service and Sunday evening on God A Reality. evening services run nightly except Saturday through March 8 with special music and visiting church groups. The public is urged to attend daily services.
