Proposals for $5 Tax Use On Rt 57

Permissive Tax to Fund City Roads and Route 57 Project

The permissive vehicle tax will add five dollars to every license fee collected in Ohio. Returned to the home county for road improvement, with funds earmarked for major thoroughfares. Rittman plans to use the money for the $34,000 Route 57 south project after state payment terms are met. May 1 and Nov 1 remittances begin, with two-year state payments. City council forms six advisory committees to assist the city manager.

Firemen Report On Year Of Fires In Rittman

Rittman volunteers answered 55 fire calls in 1968 with total fire damage of 10630 dollars. Buildings 7755 dollars contents 2720 dollars other 155 dollars. 48 calls in city 5 in Milton township 2 in Wadsworth township. Grass fires 19 with most in March and April. 12 fires in each of two months. Department had 25 firemen. payroll 4471 dollars. City cost per fire 81.29 dollars. Hours spent 69, average 1.25 hours per fire. Fire rate review planned by underwriters after last week’s fire. Wadsworth snorkel truck helped prevent larger loss at Calabria and Moyer properties.

Late Night Rumble Ends With Three Arrests at Bowling Alley

A Saturday early morning brawl at 77 Sunset Lanes on Ritter’s north side drew about 50 people in three groups. Police arrested Dale Berchoff Paul Phillips and Dana Christine. Bieri received a head injury and was treated. Benchoff fined 200 dollars nine days’ jail suspended and probation. Phillips and Christine fined 90 dollars each. Police commended rapid response from Ritter and Wadsworth departments to prevent further trouble.

Don Houglan Elected Chamber President in Rittman

The Rittman Chamber of Commerce elected Don Houglan as president at a directors meeting on Thursday. Frank Haynes named vice president and Kenneth West treasurer. Seven members were assigned to committees for the coming year, including Haynes chairing the membership committee with West and Warren Keister.

Old Brick Building Fire Destroys Bar and Tavern Site

At 8:10 am Thursday firemen battled a rapidly expanding blaze at a brick two story building housing Dom’s Bar and Diana’s Ta ver. Thick smoke and flames filled the upper floors as firefighters fought the inferno, while bystanders watched. An elderly man and a woman stood nearby beside trunks as the scene unfolded.
