A village council special meeting failed to resolve a dispute over damages to Mr C Snell's property during West First street improvements. Snell's attorney and council representatives debated who pays costs, with Snell signaling a potential $1100 settlement, while the council hinted at a lower figure.
The 10xlay auction at Barnard-Hamilton Co. closed last Saturday with good results. Valuable jewelry sold to satisfied customers. A drawing was held on two Saturday nights for prizes. Miss Pauline Ruckel won a diamond studded wedding ring, and the previous Saturday Mrs Coffman drew a diamond ring.
Rittman Boy Scout activity gains momentum with a record 41 attendees at the latest meeting of the Rittman Sodut. Former scouts Harry Fry Russell Raff and Logan Snyder return to boost troop efforts as Fry nears Eagle Scout status. Blair Leopard and Blazing Arrow patrols tie for music contest top honors. The program highlights Father’s Night annual expo camporee and court of honor as Pine Tree patrol reports six members.
Pauline Geiser of Rittman High School prepares for the County Oratorical contest on February 17 at Mt Eaton. Her original oration titled Free Speech will be delivered with coach L L Haney guiding the team.
In a state wide contest the local Legion Auxiliary added 23 new members. Mrs Clara Boling and Mrs Ljian Breece led opposing sides with Boling's faction winning and Boling named queen of the post. The post now lists 68 members.
After returning from Detroit last Saturday morning Chase Wilson’s car skidded into a ditch south of Cleveland causing $130 in damage. He then took a bus toward Rittman, which collided with another car on the way. He eventually reached home by a later bus.
Mervin Brodbeck of Ritman High is named on the All Northwestern Ohio football team as left end and stars for Defiance College in basketball and baseball. He also lettered in track and serves as president of multiple campus groups including the Student Council Hall Council Varsity D Association Senior Class and Holy Order of Saints.
Olympic Stadium in Detroit hosted Tri-State Heavy Weight Elimination bouts drawing Chas Ward Joe Ward Bill Simpson Chas Wilson and O H Wilson K O Kitts. The event grossed 3850 with a 19000 capacity crowd. Kitts to fight again next Friday at the Olympic and February 24 sees Kitts vs Joe Roske in Akron Armory semis.
The Alta Podrida club hosted a farewell party for Mrs Harold Brakewood at Mrs John Hickin's home last Friday evening. Guests enjoyed entertaining games and a late two course lunch. Mrs Brakewood, a charter member, received a gift. hostesses were assisted by Mrs W A Garver and Mrs A H Thomas.
Circle No 2 plans a bake sale at Ruckel's Grocery next Saturday February 14 starting at 10 00 AM. Proceeds go to Circle activities and local charity.
Supt Harfield reports a new city well in operation for a month with equipment pumping 1000 gallons per minute. The well lies some feet from the old bore, drilled by The Layne Ohme Co of Columbus, with gravel layers to stabilize flow. Council approved 8400 for construction, latest gear installed, water supply appears adequate. A photo by Frank Snyder was taken for future publication.
Akron news reports Addie Brown’s husband George Brown 97 died in a two vehicle crash at East and Euclid avenues. The other two men survived while George, rendered unconscious, perished as the car burned. Funeral prayers to be held at 29 m Friday.
Ray Wilson, long connected with The Presa, severed his link here last Saturday to take a trip to the Pacific coast. He served as a managing editor for the past year and left Cleveland last Tuesday, bound for Los Angeles with faithful service.
The Bury Bible class of the U B church met at Homer Schar’s south of town on Tuesday evening. The gathering opened with singing Count Your Many Blessings and prayer. Devotionals from St Mark 13 read by Mrs Schar, then Psalms 19:14 recited in unison. Entertainment followed with games and prizes. Mrs English gave a humorous reading. Refreshments were served. members left encouraged and welcoming to new joiners.
After practice on Thursday February 5 the D of A girls were served a chicken dinner. The following Thursday will be their regular meeting night.
Walter Keating lies in Marine Hospital at Chews Land after traveling to Cleveland seeking admission. Friends report his frail health and uncertain condition with hopes he may soon recover and return to Rittman.
Brakewoods are packing household goods in Mound Mesa Taroaht as they prepare to depart Saturday for Cheater Pao where Mr Brakewood will serve as technical engineer with Scott Paper Co. He leaves Ohio Rowboard Co after eight years in the laboratory division. Mrs Brakewood, a Maine bride of six years, helped found local civic and royal groups and was a charter member of the Olla Podrida club. They hosted many parties and dinners and leave behind numerous friends wishing them well.
The focal Rotary club heard a rare Thursday talk by Green oan a South Dakota Indian who explained conditions among his people describing perplexity and advancement.
W W Garver represents Chase Clark administrator of the Op linger estate in Medina county against W L Good's bondsmen for $9000. The Medina county records peg the estate at about $14000 with roughly $5000 recovered to date. The hearing is set after April 1.
Mrs John Hickin entertained the Friday Bridge club with guests Mrs John Bender Mrs William Helky and Mrs Farrel Derhammer calendarias and wax tapes decorated the table high score went to Mrs Ed Vorkhelm arc with high by Mrs William Hoelks a two course luncheon was served by the hostess.
County nurse Minas Margaret McWethy leads an eight grade hygiene program that started Monday and will run for three weeks. She uses dolls to illustrate discussions on practical hygiene and personal care.
February 20 program set for primary children as they prepare a yearly show on Friday night. The event invites families to attend and support the students.
Beginning Monday February 16 and ending March 1 evangelistic services will be held each evening at 30 welock at the First Brethren Church in Rittman. Rev Barnard of Dayton will be the speaker each night with good music and a hearty invitation to all to attend.
The Fant home basketball finale occurs Saturday February 14 and Friday night at Doylestown. The next night a final double header features the second string against Akron Sporting Goods at 7:30 followed by the main game vs Akron Filler. County tournament starts February 21 at Wooster College gym.
Mrs William J Starn died Monday at Wadsworth Hospital after an appendicitis operation. She was 63, a longtime Doylestown resident, born January 1884 in Miller City Ohio. Survived by husband four sons Gleason Akron Clarence Fred James at home and three daughters Mary Clark Akron Florence Bear Akron Gertrude Starn at home, plus two grandchildren. Funeral February 12 from Methodist Church with burial at Lakewood Akron. Rev G WL R Bohnert officiated and F A Frase arranged services.
District Deputy Addie Brown of Akron discusses important items at the WBA notes meeting Tuesday night. A card party with lunch and prizes is planned for February 17 in the WBA hall, with a juniors meeting February 21 at two o'clock.
Harold Lloyd’s comedy Welcome Dangar is shown Friday and Saturday at the Pastime Theatre with Barbara Kent as leading lady. William Powell stars in Street of Chance on Sunday and Monday. A clean Western Shadow Ranch with Buck Janes plays Wednesday and Thursday.
A 20 year old Norwalk youth claiming to be William Proasley was arrested by the marshal and deputy for robbing a pool room in Norwalk and admitting multiple thefts at Croston High School Rittman High School and Smithville High School with totals around 700 dollars He says the spree began after getting involved with peers and that he returned stolen cash and items when caught. He will be held for hearing in Wadsworth.
Eddie Peronad, a Sterling resident, remains in serious condition at Akron City Hospital after sufferring carbon monoxide exposure since Thursday at an Akron hotel. His condition shows some improvement as he spoke briefly about the events before. He traveled from Sterling to Akron, where he was treated for a paralysed side and flesh wounds attributed to the incident.
The Pope spoke to listeners globally for the first time via a Vatican radio system perfected with Marconi technology. The 11 pm broadcast carried in Latin with clear articulation, relayed by WTAM from Cleveland through a network of stations.
