Council settles who may use the outside mail box after Cap Rhonemus names the solution the new post office build plan. Community notices recap host events from Otterbein Bible Class to St. Ann’s Altar Society and local club gatherings.
The Rittman Public Library hosts a story hour on Saturday afternoon from 1 30 to 2 30. Mrs Frey will tell the stories.
The American Legion Auxiliary voted to direct the March 23 Bloodmobile visit under auxiliary president Mrs. Raymond Varisco. The meeting also included a report on Americanism by Mrs. Boyd Miller. Hostesses for the Feb 22 gathering were Mrs. Cy Jones and Mrs. Glenn Parman.
Administrative Assistant Charles Mann faced an emergency at a Monday council meeting as his wife went into labor. He was taken home by Police Chief Merle Heffelman then rushed to Wooster Hospital, only to be turned back. The baby arrived after 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, the Manns’ second child. City Hall staff smoked cigars in celebration.
The three Federated Clubs of Rittman nominate Mrs Willard Hauenstein as Woman of the Year in a contest by the Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs. The winner will be announced in April at the State Convention in Cleveland. Mrs Hauenstein is a churchwoman homemaker public servant and civic leader. She belongs to Milton Presbyterian Church Olla Podrida Club PTA Rand Parents and is secretary of Charter Commission and president of Presbyterian Missionary Society. Mr and Mrs Hauenstein and daughter Barbara 14 live on Estio Avenue Stein is superintendent of the Rittman Public Schools. Committee chairs include Mrs Robert Davis and Mrs C B Shook and Mrs Vernon Yoho.
The Board of Public Affairs and Council clash over overtime for Mrs. Clayton Kunkler. Board says she earned overtime for meetings and Saturday water bills. Council asserts these were in the salary ordinance. Council will pay two weeks overtime and seek a joint meeting to resolve the issue.
The Boy Scouts mark 50 years of scouting with events in Akron and Wooster. Activities include a Saturday evening swim at the Y, a Sunday church meeting, a Monday night planning session on winter hiking, a potato chip factory tour, and a weekend campout weather permitting. A February 18 family dinner at the American Legion Hall is a covered dish event.
Sylvan Wiles, new school board member and former high school principal, urged reforms in speech and language courses and language offerings. The board postponed the 1960-61 curriculum for study while salaries and funding were debated, with figures showing salaries dominating the budget and a reliance on federal aid.
The Rittman March of Dimes drive collected 1623.37 dollars, exceeding the 1500 dollar goal. Co chairs Miss Betty Klotzle and Miss Jeannette Winkler thank all marchers, local businesses, and donors who aided the successful effort.
Mr and Mrs Larry Wertz at 46 Washington Street were surprised by their daughters and 25 guests on January 31 to celebrate their 19th wedding anniversary. The party featured games organized by Dolores and Bonnie Wertz. The girls had saved funds while babysitting and at school to fund the party.
There is time to enter the 1960 Mrs. America contest sponsored locally by Ohio Fuel Gas Company. Entry blanks are at 8 North Main Street and must be in by March 31. More than 50000 dollars in prizes. The contest is open to married women over 21 and judged on homemaking ability appearance personality poise character grooming and community activities. Local winners will be selected in April.
The Rittman Garden Club approves moraine thornless honeylocust and amur privet for the dump site planting. Landscape architect Charles Ross notes honeylocust chosen for smoke resistance and cost, with amur privet as a cheaper four foot shrub. Planting, 40 feet from Route 94, will occur in spring with mulching and grading work and a $500 project budget.
Rittman High School hosts its Winter Concert on Thursday February 18 at 7 30 PM in the high school gym with Vic Hyde the one man band as guest artist Hyde who plays 65 instruments has toured Europe 10 times and worked with 23 named bands Tickets 75 cents for adults 50 cents for students available from band members or at the door
Rittman Boy Scouts plan a covered dish supper at the American Legion Hall on Thursday February 18 at 6 pm with parents and families. A program by Patrols will follow and the event marks the 50th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America.
Ohio Department work crews will install signs from the Gate Street interchange directing travelers to Doylestown. Residents complained to the governor that locals can't find the village and visitors report long detours south on Ohio 5 due to poor marking.
Council and residents push for a new Post Office in Rittman as letters from Rep Bow and Sen Lausche acknowledge the resolution. Officials report renewed interest after decades of delays, with Post Office Department engagement promised but no firm action yet.
Wesley Johnson of Sterling received a stiff penalty for driving the car that killed two youths last August on County Road 70 west of Creston. He was convicted of second degree manslaughter by a jury and placed on five years probation, with an eight year driving ban and jail in Wayne County until May 1. Probation requires curfew at 10 p.m. and no alcohol above 3.2 beer. violations bring jail. Prosecutor Leedy had asked license revocation but not reformatory. The victims were 16 year olds Larry K. Crow and Ronald Lee Hoosier of Creston. Johnson is the first jury-convicted manslaughter case in Wayne County.
